Any advice switching from an 01 SV650 to an 08 GSXR 600 on the track?

Just ended up getting a crazy deal on this GSXR and planning on starting it out next year. Any suggestions on some things I should look for my first day out?

Might be common sense but worth mentioning...don't try to hit your record lap times right away until you get used to your new ride.

I have never ridden an SV, so I can't comment on the differences, but I have an 08 GSX-R600 and it is really easy to ride. Not too much power, but plenty to get you in trouble. From what I understand the turn in will be slower than your SV and you will want to keep the revs up on the GSXR. The guy I bought my GSXR from went to an SV to race because he said it was easier to race.

The GSX-R600 is so much fun to wind up!

 

Just take your time and be smooth on the throttle. You have a bit more power available. Other then that, you'll be fine.

I went from an SV1000 to an '06 GSX-R600 this year and was shocked at how much more comfortable it was!!! I was also amazed at the shifter and brakes, I think those are the two things you will be most pleasantly surprised about. Clutchless upshifting is now a BREEZE.

Get your suspension set up on the first day out.

Take it easy for a few sessions and you'll be fine and you will most likely really enjoy the upgrade.

 

Oh, and you will also need to re-train yourself from shifting at 10kRPM to 15k+ LOL!

 

After 5 years riding and racing on a 1st gen SV, I got a 675. Not a gsxr, but similar enough I suppose.
Be cautious on corner exit compared to the SV. I would whack open full throttle mid-corner on the SV, sometimes before the apex even.......that chit don't fly with anything that has over 105 hp.

I concur. I've still got my SV and also have a Triumph 675. Your throttle inputs on the GSXR will have to be smoother and more controlled, it's considerably more powerful. The brakes will be much stronger and most likely give you better feel. The gearbox will probably shift more smoothly as well. Enjoy the new ride and be safe.

 

You'll fall madly in love with the GSXR. The 06-10 GSXR600/750 is probably the best track platform available when you weigh performance against cost and parts availability. I had an 06 and miss it desperately. Where you used to torque your way out of corners, now you'll have to work at keeping your revs up. Below 8-9K, there's nobody home on a 600. I like to say that a 600 is "the tip of the whip." You have to work very hard to be really fast on a 600 but it's the most enjoyable, addictive work there is. Congrats on your new machine!
Maybe a Bazzaz Traction Control? It would help ease the transition. My Gixxer 6 didn't have one but all my friends who have that bike now have installed them and are very impressed.

You'll be able to ride like an old fart for most of the track & still motor past SV's on the straights & drive them crazy.

Serious answer: Take some time to get used to the additional power & you should be fine. Like K3 said, one of the best platforms out there.

 

are you guys sure the the sv will turn faster? about to jump form the sv to the gsxr world myself. and i can concur....opening the throttle before the apex... grattan last turn ccw. just to give me a couple seconds jump on the gsxrs and the likes. i would count to about 5 and then they would blow by me...zing zing zing zing. all to do again from the bus stop on. think mr baker had to get in front of me slow me down once after the bowl... sorry sir. was trying to hard to make it up. hopefully won't have to do that anymore.

its been said already a couple of times, but make sure your keeping those revs up through the turns. You will be frustrated for awhile as everyone smokes you at corner exits. Like K3 said, you need to be in that 10k range to even have a chance

Gonna have to work on body postioning,wieghting the outside peg more,standing it up more getting on the meat of the tire before max throttle,getting forward more upon power throttle,cannot have a clumsy throttle hand for sure...just take you time and reach out to those who have been there like you are now and you'll be fine...have fun too!!!
