yes I am.. and I still own that... but I honestly went to all the trouble to make it as best as possible for anyone that was close to me by taking all those steps prior.
I picked up a WEN 3100 inverter generator last night for $360 I found and OfferUp. It was brand new, still in the box! The guy told me it was a gift that he didn't need but I had a hard time believing that. Likely stolen! I was a bit apprehensive about buying it but eventually caved in and handed him the cash. I researched the gen before and it would have cost me close to $750 to buy new. Anyhow, thought I'd let some of you know that there are some nice deals on these sites. anyone know if this generator is any good. Reviews on it seemed pretty favorable so I figured I would take a chance on it.
Picked up a new Champion 4000 at the local Farm & Fleet scratch and dent sale for $300 with wheel kit and electric start. Frame had a bend in one tube so it looks like the box got banged into. Rubber mallet and a bit of muscle and the thing is good to go! 68 dba is pretty quiet so probably no complaints about noise from pit neighbors. Put some oil in, charged the battery, fueled it up and it started first time no worries. Tested it with the RV ran the AC, microwave, all the lights and TV at the same time. No problem at all. Could hardly hear it from inside the trailer. When I heard about the sale (local store only) made sure to be there when they opened!
Clayton, it ain't as bad as most jobsite gennys but that thing will be loud as fuck Decibels are logarithmic in scale. 3 or 4 db increase is roughly double the amount of sound pressure So at 10 db more than a similar output honda or Yamaha inverter type it is three or four times louder Well into the being a dick zone for a cold track
I know all about sound levels, my engineering degree is in Occupational Safety & Health. Industrial Hygiene is something I am well trained in as is my great friend Tom Foxx. We both came from this arena. At 68 dba it isn't bad at all, that said I'm already adding an extra muffler! Should be able to drop it to 61-62 dba without too much problem. My Yamaha is 61 dba so that is the goal. The add on muffler was $14, now I'm working on getting it properly mounted so it stays put. I put extra foam around the intake already and that made a slight sound drop. Like I've previously posted, it isn't too tough to make these things quiet enough to not be a problem for others in the area! I couldn't pass up this deal - would take a lot of effort and expense to make this thing cost what a good Yamaha/Honda unit. That said I wish I never sold my good ol 3000is.
Yeah, Damn near a couple grand for similar Honda/Yamaha output. You could build the champion It's own little house and be bucks up I have a champion 3100 inverter that has been solid, but it's noticeable louder than a similar Honda I probably gonna pull the trigger on a pair of Honda eu2000. Stewart might kill me if the muffler comes off the 3100 again. Easy fix, but goddamn did it suddenly get super loud one day.
I spent some time to fit the extra muffler to the Champion 4000. It is almost exactly the same noise level as my Yamaha 2000 watt generator. Cheap and easy. Muffler, 3 bolts and a bracket - less than $20. HOT Warning painted on just in case someone decides to get near the secondary muffler. If it stays together I'll be very pleased.
