Soo I'm in the market for a new bike. I have narrowed it down to a 636 or a 675r (brand new) this will be a track only bike. What one should I go with? This being said I know the 675r has all the goodies but I am seriously gun shy on euro stuff as I don't want another situation like I have with my Ducati which everything was 5 times more expensive and the motorwork being crazy expensive to the point I couldn't afford it. I am a mid to faster A guy and would like to start racing so I am trying to budget. I know I can get a used bike etc already set up but I want new. Thanks. Also I have consider a gsxr 600 as well.
That was going to be my go to until I sat on it. I always felt very cramped on an r6 and the new one I still feel that way. Plus I'm coming off of only riding a liter bike on the track so I figure the cheaters with the extra torque I'd be happier with
I am biased. 675R. Parts are NOT 5 times more expensive. Just don't attempt buying an Akrapovic Ti exhaust for it. I love 3rd gear wheelies.
Apparently all the Triumph race kit parts are discontinued. http://www.triumph675.net/forum/showthread.php?p=4851521
Really should ride them both and decide. My guess is you will like the 636 better it's a sit in bike where the Daytona is more like the r6 being a sit on bike. The seating and reach is different the zx6r you feel like your in the bike and part of the machine where the Daytona your on top of the bike makes much faster transitions in IMHO but seems more cramped for my stature I have a 636 my wife has a Daytona I'm cramped on the Daytona it's a fun bike but yes parts are more spend. I know you said new but that 13 forsale on here is nicely done and it's the same bike 13-17 for the zx6r
I am pretty in with my local triumph dealer. Basically the other day when I was inquiring about a Daytona I ask the same question. They stated to me that Triumph stopping the 675R has been a rumor since the bike came out. It was further stated that they sell more R's then base and it wouldn't make much financial sense for Triumph to sell there top selling supersport model since they have no liter bike. According to them they have no indication from Triumph that the 675R is going to stop production. I believe them because think about it it be a good selling point. Hey buy it now before it's gone type thing. As far as the sitting position I am partial to the "in the bike" sitting position. I learned to ride track on a Ducati 999 and that had a very sprawled out sitting position and you felt very in the bike. I rode a 675 on the street as my buddy has a 2011 model and I hated the sitting position. That being said I figured it be something I'd get used too as everywhere you read the 675 is a pretty lethal track bike. Really my biggest concern is parts and prices. When I had my Ducati I was single didn't have a home and made decent money. Now I have a kid, soon to be wife, kid, truck payments, campers etc and the funds aren't what they used to be. It made me sick when I did have my Ducati to pay rediculous amounts of money for what should be cheaper things. Example win my Cush drive cracked into a million pieaces at little tally. (Cast aluminum) to replace it brand new was 800 bucks. Found a used one for 100 on eBay but still. The swing arm was torn up from the chain and figured I replace it. Yeah only found one and it was just as banged up on eBay for 750 used. Looked up same year gsxr swingarm for the hell of it. 30 bucks and free shipping for a practically brand new one.
I rode a 2013 zx6r as a track only bike for a year and a half and the only thing I ever did to it was change the oil and tires, 0 issues with anything else! Great track bike!
just understand the 675r have an over-rev issue (ALL OF THE 675 GENERATIONS), hates over-revving (downshift revs are not stopped by the rev limiter). you bounce these off the limiter much, and the valve train dies FAST. we see a lot of these bikes at the track in track days and racing, and many of the more aggressive people hurt these motors, some multiple times a year. they cannot be revved to the moon, repeatedly like the inline 4 bikes. I was in your same position a few years ago, could have bought used well set up, stt, ama, wera race bikes ect... or new. was looking at the same bikes, 675r's and 636 kaws. I bought a kaw, and never regret it at all. with a thin head gasket, cam timing, a full system, unrestricting the ecu with a flash, you can be near 130 at the rear wheel without race fuel, and no revving issues. don't get me wrong, the 675r is very capable but, I want reliability without that little thought in the back of my mind... did I really over rev the motor on the up shift, or did I over downshift, and over rev the bike? is it hurt, when will it fail, how much is this going to cost, how long will I be away from the track for this??? it's your money, it's your choice. remember dealers want to sell bikes, they will tell you what you want to hear, to get you to drive out of the lot with the product THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE, not what you necessarily want/need. buyer beware. Exact reason I am leaning towards the Kawy just for the fact the jap brands tend to be more bulletproof. I like to be able to beat it and still have it keep running. Just the Triumph is sexier and I love the fact it's already "track ready" with minimal effort. Been trying to find online how the stock showa suspension is on the Kawy for track purposes but all I can find is how it is for the street which does me nothing.
The Triumph is no less "bulletproof". In fact, I just watch Triumph get 3rd at the Isle of man Supersport race tonight. I an give you a LIST of racers that have done just fine on Triumph. Its 100% about maintenance. Maintain your bike, it'll last. Even our very own Director Trevor has a Triumph.
Well there is no 2017 model, so they are probably done producing 675's. The speculation is that there will be a new Daytona using the new Moto2 engine they are developing. That isn't what I was referring to, though. I'm sure stock parts will be available for some time. The race kit parts will not be. Most track bikes are mostly stock anyway, though. Mine has all the race kit parts, and I will not be able to replace any of it unless I find it used. I'm not sure if an engine re-build would be an issue.
not hearing, witnessed. I know several racers that had "spare motors" waiting for their need for just such emergencies at race events. that way one could be in the bike, one would be the spare. when the bike motor went, the spare went in, the damaged motor went for rebuild, and to be the spare when it was done. I went through this same quandry a couple years ago and wound up bringing home a shiny new '15 ZX-6R. I love the bike, but if I could go back in time I'd slap the shit out of myself and tell me to go buy a used one that's already been built instead of buying a new one. Taking a ride in the crash truck while holding your instrument cluster in your hand changes your perspective.
When you lose the clutch in the middle of a practice session and re-build it the morning of the races only to find out it is missing pieces, you wish you set it up yourself. It costs more buying new, but then you can be sure everything is done right.

That's why I want to go new. I don't want anyone else's issues as I tend to break stuff well enough myself. With my Ducati before it's complete engine failure explosion I spend several track weekends that were ruined due to parts failure like an exploded cush drive Saturday morning after a 12 hour one way trip and oil sensor failure which caused the bike to go into safety mode and wouldn't get out until it was reset by the dealer even tho the oil was at the correct level...another weekend ruined by lunch after a 6 hour trip and a day off. Then the next weekend the engine failure before lunch. Before anyone jumps down my throats the bike was well maintained per spec. Just bad luck with it and poor design.
Buy the kawi and thank me later....... Look around last year before I bought my used 900 mile 13 zx6r (with a shit ton of goodies) I had found 3 no mile 13's sitting in dealers I could have bought for a steal most new with warranty. Village powersports in Grandrapids mi had 2 not sure if they sold or not but we were talking 9k ish
