My son is 13 year old and wants to do track days with his old man. And I keep telling him to wait till he is 18. But just hypothetical what if I would get him started. How would I start him? I know what I went though to just ride a motorcycle, then on the track. But I was already over 18.

Also my first post on this board. Hello to everyone!

I met Kayla at Barber, she passed 6 of us in one corner (I group) she was 12 then.

If he can ride safely start out with a 125cc and work up as his skills do. (She passed me on a 125, hurt an old man's ego) LMAO.

I'd look around for a minimoto organization in your area and start him off on one of those. They're a blast because you ride the snot out of them and not get to far in over your head, not to mention the fact that they're cheap to race and he would really learn a lot.

He has been riding a mini 50cc gas pocket bikes. Not a lot of room to ride around in the Chicagoland suburban life. Good that most of all the families around us keep to themselves and don't mind kids playing in the street.

I know it's not the best start but I can't keep him off of the track videos and trying to learn how to ride, from watching track videos to reading books.

Theres a large go kart track (~1mile long) a few hours north in Shawano Wi that has open track days where you can ride all day for like $40. Get a kids sized dirt bike, put some slicks on it, and let him go have at it.

I just built a kx65 for myself for cross training between track days.

Put the kid on dirt. Nothing teaches like dirt. Costs are lower, risks are lower and kids love dirt.

I'm going to be doing dirt bike school with my 12 year old this year. They teach the basic class at road america... but this place does all 3 MSF dirt courses. From what I have read this will get you into trail riding... which may not have the excitement of MX, but provides a good foundation for riding skills. I'm not sure how the riding is in the Chicago area, I'm lucky in green bay, the UP has tons of trails within 2 hrs... it makes for a great trip up to the trails, and back. Then if you get Sena units like we have, it allows us to talk about stuff while we are riding the trails.

    Cheer,
    BGroup

Do you have to have your own dirt bikes?

Yea, we got her a TTR 125 LE and a TTR 230 for me last year. They aren't fast, but perfect for learning and trail riding. The school says that they will supply dirt bikes if you need.

Sounds good. I will start to watch when their class are and add him and me. Maybe if my daughter wants to too.
