I am a long time track day rider who has finally decided to run a few races. I was going to run the sound of thunder in AHRMA and was looking to use and SV650 since many run those bikes successfully. Are there other options? What about the 450 singles that people have built? I am looking for some info and opinions from people who have run this series or used these types of bikes.
I know Richard, Dave Grey, Teddy and DiSalvo ran with them.... I plan on a couple races this year with them as well however WERA has a much better schedule that fits my area more...
I raced the AHRMA rounds at Road America with my SV. superstock SV's (WERA superstock not CCS) are the main contenders for SoT3. You can bump up to 2 for sure but then you are up against 848's and 675's so good luck with that. If you're SV is superbike then you compete in SoT2 and can bump up to SoT1 if you want (1299's). The SV crowd is always good racing and the grids are usually pretty big at RA. You need a AMB transponder and the AHRMA membership. I always liked the RA event since it's a big bike show and swap meet. There are actually spectators at these races!
so would the 899 be legal in SOT? I had a Ducati before and a 675 but did not think the modern ones would work. I was told that the SV is so economical to race and fun as well I did not consider anything else.
for the transponder does the organization control those or can I get one from AMB? Sorry I am a total NOOB at racing
ALSO just a FYI if you do the riders school at WERA for your provisional license your first 2 PN races you get a free transponder...
He wants to run AHRMA, not WERA. AHMRMA will rent transponders but you need to sign up online to guarantee they will have one. If you don't have a previous race license or school certificate you can take the AHMRA class except at Barber (last event of the season). I do not know the class rules off hand but if the 848 is legal in SOT2 then I would assume the 899 is as well. You need to read the rulebook and know for sure. Also you cannot run the Barber event as your first ever AHMRA race. You have to do another weekend to be allowed in. They have to limit entries since it's such a huge event. You can buy a transponder from AMB as well with a yearly subscription that is $100 or something per year. I don't remember how much it costs to rent on at the track but I think it's $50 or $60.
You have to do 2 weekends before Vintage Fest at Barber.... At least those were the rules the last 2 years...
Thanks. it probably makes sense to rent until I figure out how much I like this "racing thing". seems like it could be very different than my coaching or riding on the track.
I am planning on Sonoma (tentative), gingerman definite, Road America definite, NJMP definite, Barber tentative. so I should be OK I would think for the Barber weekend
I was told it was just 2 race's so if you raced saturday and sunday you would be good to go for Barber. Didn't have to be at different tracks. The RA event is well attended but the Gingerman one is not. No idea about NJMP. Barber is whole nother animal. You need to get to the track almost a week early just to get a decent pit spot.
Actually there is room in the Pits if your racing but you better bring a genny....... If your there to camp and do the swap meet now that's another. Yes the line getting in is a total cluster.. Most people get there on Weds and get in Thurs.....
