Hi! My 13yo son is interested in trying a track day. He is a capable rider and I feel he could safely do a novice day. Looking at the STT website it says the following:

"Riders 11-15 years old with a valid competition license may participate on any size bike through the 600 class (including SV650)."

Does anyone know what would be involved in getting a competition license? I've searched around but can't find much. Anyone have any experience with track day for minors?

    Also STT's site says:
"Individual venues may have rules that differ from STT".
Do most of the tracks allow minors or is it only a few? Anyone know which tracks allow minors?

    Thanks!

I'm sure someone can confirm shorty,.... but my experience with this has been we assign a dedicated coach with people 11-15 for maximum safety & guidance to get them started. I've helped a bunch of enthusiastic 13 yr. old's catch up to pops! As far as track particulars you can call sportbiketracktime and ask if there is a list where you can or can't. Hope to see at the track!

Thanks for the advice. He will be glad to hear it's possible. I'll give sportbiketracktime a call.

    office has the best answers.
My wife does registration at Grattan. Last year 11 to 18 they need 1 on 1 coaching until they get a race license. parent or legal guardian need to be present to sign the consent form. once they have a race license they can be in normal groups.

Answer is actually pretty simple. Your child(12 yrs old at least)needs to attend one of the race licensing schools like Learning Curves (midwest) etc. They are held at some CCS race days. Check LC site or call Rick Breuer. Great guy!. After completing and passing written and riding exam he will be issued a competition license. Send that to STT office ,create separate stt account for your kid and you should be able to sign him up for intermedia or novice if he needs some time with instructor or to get used to riding with others. As far as track eligibility- my 14 yrs old did 5 different ones in midwest area with no issues. Hope it helps to clarify whole process. Thank you Stt for making my son's dream possible last year...

Awesome information, thanks so much!! Sounds like it would be best to just get him a race license first. Any other race licensing schools you know of besides Learning Curves? Just curious what other schools would be available and where they are located. My son will be ecstatic to hear this news. Hope to see you and your son at the track eventually!! Thanks again!

It's true that Stt could do 1-1 coaching and can issue race license as well but entire process is a bit more complicated because of liability/minor paperwork, etc. I was told that race license route would be much easier for everyone. Since I'm in Chicagoland area LCR was obvious choice and I didn't search any further. Good luck. See you at some point!

STT Does race license class i recommend getting a couple one on one days first.
I have worked with many minors over the years coaching with STT ( including Max Van junior cup racer ) and it is can be so fun and rewarding.
We have a great program that is safe.
I am at nearly every Grattan event come by and say hi i am easy to spot orange work and play camper.
Gate fee at grattan isn't terrible if you want to come and check out an event if you've never been to one 10-15ish a day or 20 ish for the weekend
