Power RACE PRD/PRE comparison
|

|
Does anyone know the relative grip and longevity of the PRE rear vs the PRD rear? I got about 4 days out of a PRE rear last year (running a Duc 748) and wondering if the PRD will give me a little more smiles for maybe 3 track days per rear. I tend to ride at roughly a slow "A" pace, but I'm hoping to improve a little this year as well. Also thinking about doing a lot of days early on when the temps are a bit on the chilly side.
Any FHE?
Thanks!

Well, it's hard to tell anyone exactly how long a tire will last. Too many variables. Ability, what you ride, how you ride, what track you frequent, etc...
That being said, I have run both tires to a point that I feel I have decent knowledge of them. The "E" is my top choice. But, here are some things to note:
-I ride a 1000. They tend to chew up rears fairly quick at a spirited pace. So, I have better "longevity" with the E vs the D...
-I typically only run Ds when it is fairly cool out (Below 60-65) and for races.
Overall, I can only get maybe 1 10 lap sprint out of a D. I can stretch that to two 10 lap sprints, but against the guys I have faced, fresh tires are a priority. For track day use, I would typically get one day out of the tire before it was done for... That's when I am not coaching...
The E on the other hand will get me 4 days of riding at maybe 60% and coaching. Track days are the typical 9-5 type setup we run with...
I am running right around 19 PSI on the rear with damn good results. Even with the 1000, my tires are looking like this:
E:
This is after a 10 lap sprint and a day at Grattan in sub 45 degree weather...
D:
The number one thing I will tell you is that setup is premium with these tires. Poor setup and you'll be burning through tires like a mad man. You getting 4 days out of an E on a Duc 748 at slower A pace seems a bit early... However, some guys are changing tires when they feel it is needed and they could get another day, etc. Or, I tend to run mine through the wear marks because I am a tight ass...
So, my idea of time may be skewed a bit, but my pace is decent and I think that if I can get 4 days out of an E on my 1000, you should see better than 5 days on your tire... But, you could also be riding a track that wears tires quicker... Putnam for example will wear a tire faster than say, Grattan...
Anyways, try the D and see what you think. Grip is great and control is awesome. I feel the D is simply a bit stickier and has good grip for a period of time. However, once that time exceeds, it will spin more than the E. The E just seems to be the tire that suits my riding style and expectations. The D seems too, as well, but just doesn't last as long...
Not sure if my ramblings made sense... _________________ Back as the COIL!!

Thanks very much for quite a ton of info!
I think I'll get one "D" just to see what it's about, but I think the E is my tire. BTW: Two of those 4 days were in 90+ temps at VIR (Grand East on Monday no less!).
