We burn Sunoco blue,112 octane, in our race car,$8.50 a gallon.I,ve tried a little in most my toys over the years,69 650 triumph,Z1, and some other bikes and always showed a decrease in performance except the Triumph, which compression was a little higher. It ran good in my 71 454 chevelle when it ran the built motor but even then it was 3.50 a gallon and that was in the early 80,s and reg.gas was 90 cents. My 99 R6 which has a mild built motor, doesn't like it either. Most of the Citgo gas stations in our area carry ethanol free gas.Besides being better for your engine,it also gets you a little better gas mileage, evening out the higher cost

I have only run 87......... I was told by a very reputable AMA Mechanic it burns hotter and is better for the engine top to bottom...

Yes i was advised to run race fuel in it to clean it. As i rode the bike it began to run alittle better (still hesitates on hard acceleration) but i only ran maybe 2 gallons not a full tank as advised. I ran 100 octane. When i saw in this thread that race fuel will harm your motor i began to question the advice. I was only asking due to my ignorance on the whole subject.

this.. i despise ethanol in fuel, it destroys motors, but the gomnenet thinks we "need" it
lucky dog you, closest to me is over 100 miles according to Pure gas app.
i've heard that very same thing, i wish i could trust the e85 stuff enough to get my bike able to run that.

to the OP, run the u4.4 at an event & see what ya think of it, the worst that happens is you say "damn those guys were right" or you say "this is the greatest thing since sliced bread" its your $$ and you can do with it what you will, but if you run it once, you find out for yourself. i happen to love the smell of race gas :rawk:

I'm glad someone said it. The octane rating is not a measure fuel energy or performance. Simply the resistance to knocking. Or detonating prior to spark. Compression heats the air fuel mixture. The temperature is directly proportional to the compression. Higher compression equals higher temperature. To high a temp and combustion occurs before spark and knocking or pinging.

As a chemical engineer who spent years in the petroleum industry... I'm telling you. It's marketing. Unless your engine calls for it, don't use the higher octane gasoline. I know this started out as a question about race gas and that is slightly different but the answer for most of us is probably the same. It's not worth it unless you just love that smell.

    Absolutely. :D

Pop Shadow decals are worth at least 1sec per lap. I put them on all of my bikes before racing them to ensure I have a good chance. :thumb:

I bought a supersport built 600rr a couple years ago and been running Shell 93 pump gas without any issues but seems nowadays it can be a crapshoot how much plus/minus % of ethanol is in pump gas. This year I was thinking of trying to run more consistent fuel for my piece of mind. My first thought was running a mix of 89(nonethanol) and VP T4 to net about 94ish Octane. A local shop sells VP race fuel but haven't confirmed whether they will order some T4 or not. They do have U4.4 In stock. My combustion engineer friend recommends a mix of U4.4 and the 89 if T4 was hard to get a hold of. So has anyone ran or have experience with running mixes? Thanks.

mixing will not get you the consistancy you are trying to accomplish.

also i checked into the vp t4. every vp distributor i talked to does not stock it, and wont order it for some reason (without waiting until their next "big order"). also, it is about 15.00 per gallon but, it is ethanol free.

recently my tech/motor guy was able to get a dealer license for renegade fuels.they make an ethanol free 95 octane. i can buy that for about 8.00 per gallon. not cheap but, i know it has no ethanol in it. not sure if i will run that or pump regular or premium.

I have mixed it a bunch.

The way my 750 was built, my builder wanted me to run race fuel all the time...but said i could get away with 2 parts race fuel and 1 part pump gas at track days and race practices to help reduce the fuel costs a lil bit.

  14. I run a "race" fuel that I get from a Mapco station that's about 20 miles from my house. Costs me $6.75 per gallon. It claims to be 110 octane. Neither of my bikes is "built" but they aren't stock either. I have 2 AMA mechanics that do all the work on them. They have both told me I'm not really going to increase my lap times strictly by using that fuel, but it has no ethanol and it burns very clean. I like the way it smells and I haven't had any issues with either bike because of it. I am not claiming to be any kind of expert in this or any other area of this sport. My only goal for a track day is to have fun and not crash.:jester:

be careful buying race fuel from station pumps. usually it is torco or cam 2, or the like, that is 110 LEADED fuel, that is meant for street cars with the need for lead, or local roundy round race tracks. leaded fuel in bikes with 02 sensors, can prematurely cause sensors to fail but, on the plus side, it adds lubricity to the fuel to help valves, and the fuel system.

What did they do to the motor to warrant the 110 octane?

  20. As I said, I'm no expert. The r6 has had the ecu reflashed, and aftermarket exhaust. The Ducati factory recommends 95 octane. Am I just wasting my money??? The shop that has done all the work on both bikes is Performance Cycleworx. I've trusted them since day one and they haven't let me down yet.
