Hi, is there a certain brand/type of fiberglass resin/cloth/mat materials to use for repairing/mods to track plastics? Would this be just fine to use? https://www.homedepot.com/p/3M-Bondo-1-qt-All-Purpose-Fiberglass-Resin-20122/202077790 https://www.homedepot.com/p/3M-Bondo-8-sq-ft-Fiberglass-Cloth-20128/202077813 https://www.homedepot.com/p/3M-Bond...erglass-Resin-Liquid-Hardener-20126/202077781
Should work, look around for some in a roll. Makes many patches really easy, saves cutting a sheet and having it shed all over. https://www.amazon.com/Fibre-Glast-Fiberglass-Mat-Tape/dp/B015NM3358 Don't forget to rough up the area being patched so the resin will adhere. Less is more, second application IMO better than sanding.
Yep, perfectly fine, in fact I believe that is what I have. Remember you will need regular Bondo filler for the outside of your repairs.
Yes the home depot stuff will work for this small application. However, you need to put a layer of mat down before the cloth to make it adhere better. Remember to watch your mix ratio as you will only have about 10-12 minutes working time. Better to mix your resin/catalyst in smaller batches for only what you need then to put it all together at one time. And mix thoroughly!
You might want to also look up how to use cyanoacrylate instead of epoxy. It's essentially a strong blend superglue which model aircraft builders use to repair their rigs. A few viscosities are available, and when used with fibreglass matting and a setting spray can create a very strong internal repair which dries in seconds. I used it to repair the inside of my R6 fairings where cracks had occurred, and used it as a backing for my bondo panel repair where the original plastic was missing. For the price, it's worth a go, and I used it to a decent degree of success. Just be careful to follow the steps, and not inhale the fumes. Here's a youtube video (not mine) showing the process I followed Good luck
David. Fiberglass work is 90% preparation & 10% layer resin on glass. If you’re prep sucks so will your end product. Everything Keith said is right on the money. On average 10-12 mins working time depending on mix ratios. Don’t mess with it after that. I used to start mixing & start a timer at the same time. It beeps I’m done. Good luck. Steve
