    Hi,
I am new to Sportbike Track Time. I've read many posts and it is clear this is a fantastic organization!

I have been riding, almost daily, for 25+ years. I've had R6s, R1s, Harley's, enduros, dirt bikes, etc..

However, I have never been to the track - any track. This will be my first time on a track.

I did just recently sign up for the August 3rd/4th, 2019 Road Atlanta weekend and can't be more excited!!!

I have many questions. The first of which is - is there a specific forum for Road Atlanta that I should post my questions in? Or should I just post them in this thread? (or other)?

Here is a sample of my questions:
    - I plan to bring a 10x10 canopy and a cooler with water and lunch ---- I'm very limited on what I can bring but is there anything else that is a critical item that I *must* bring?

    - I have family that live 5 minutes from the track - so I have locals (I am also local) that would like to pop in and out during the weekend - do they just need to bring $5 per head to come in or are there other requirements?

    - I have new tires, new brake pads, a low mileage 2015 R1 in mint condition, mirrors are off, new oil and filter as well... I also have a 1pc suit, race boots, gauntlet gloves.......... anything else (I'm riding novice of course)? Do I need racing number stickers? (I want to use the #42 - is that ok if numbers are needed?)

    - I am limited in what I can bring... I am local so I may actually ride my bike in (90 minute ride for me)... and have family bring the tent/cooler/water/ice/food/etc. I am just wanting to make sure I have the logistics planned as best I can given my limitations (i.e. no truck, no RV, no trailer for me... ). Any help and friendly faces are most appreciated!

I am excited and looking forward to whomever I meet there!!

you don't need numbers so you can just put #42 somewhere if you like. Bring visor cleaner, a towel (to wipe sweat off, it's going to be hot). Some tools wouldn't hurt. duct tape and blue tape. $5 a head and signing the waiver should be enough to get family/friends in. A folding chair is a good idea. You'll want somewhere to sit. Your bike should be good. They don't expect much in Novice.

Make sure you don't have glycol in the radiator. Bring tons of water (for you) Bring 5 gallons of gas and some extra oil.
Bring some tools. And don't forget the key. (seen it happen)

Thank you! I'll bring lots of water, some chairs, and some minimal tools.

As for gas - I've been told there is race gas at Road Atlanta but it's expensive. But what is expensive? Is it $10/gallon or $50/gallon?
I'm in a good spot w/ money - but just don't have tools or ability to bring a lot of things with me. So $10/gallon isn't an issue.... if we are looking at $50/gallon I have to start wondering if we should invade Iran.

I won't forget my key - in fact, I'm actually considering riding my bike the 90 minute drive to the Road Atlanta area just to wear in the new tires and brake pads (and having family bring tent/cooler/water/food).

Also - for coolant - I have Yamaha OEM coolant in the bike now. Should I replace w/ Engine Ice? (again, .... novice group).

DO NOT RIDE the bike to the track. Seen others do that and then wad the bike up and then need a trailer anyways.

You can scuff the tires up on the track. Brake pads I would just head to a nearby parking lot to bed them in before leaving home. Just use the gas you normally use. Race gas usually requires rejetting or remapping depending on bike. Also some race fuels are a tick on the corrosive side and need to be drained after the day. Price varies from brand and blend. $10/gal to over $50/gal can be found. 5 gal extra should get you through the day (fill the bike up before leaving).

Not sure if you need to change coolent in novice, but I would do it anyways JIC. Engine Ice is fine.

Start drinking water a day or two in advance.

I don't think a lot of tools would be needed for novice. And most others are willing to help you if you do need one. A rear stand I would say is a must (zip tie the kickstand UP or remove it).

Biggest thing to do is have fun.

Bring a Fan..... and start hydrating on Weds... there is a gas station 1/2 mile out on 53 towards 85. Don’t ride your bike there.get there the day before and be prepared. Leave your Ego at the gate and come in and have fun..

Welcome to the track. Be sure and post about your track experience after. I always enjoy the pure bliss after someone's first trackday.

I'm also new with STT. My first day will be the 29th at Road America.

Also, if you decide to keep doing this, as long as you have any car you can trailer your bike. A small open trailer like a harbor freight type is really popular from looking around at all my track days. I see them get towed behind Honda Civics all the time. Load your gear, cooler, and a pop-up in the car and you're set. Very functional.

I second the "don't ride to track". At this time of year, it's going to get HOT. The last thing you want to do at the end of a trackday is put all your stuff back on and ride home. You will be physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted - PROMISE. Shade, water and maybe a fan would be worth it - there's electrical if you bring a long extension cord. Be ON TIME - Registration and tech start at 7 AM - if there is an issue with the bike, the staff can normally help get it ready. Regular antifreeze is acceptable in novice ONLY, but it's a good idea to go to something else that isn't so difficult to clean up in event of a spill/crash. There is a full tech list in the FAQ on the STT website. Read it and have your bike meet those standards will prevent a bunch of headache at tech. Lastly, pace yourself and listen to the coaches. Don't get in over your head and have a great time!

No ego coming with me. I've been riding for decades but I'm 41 years old/young and I just want to be safe and have fun. Thanks for all the tips (you and others!)

Thank you. I'll go ahead and fill the bike up with Engine Ice. I've read the tech list multiple times and will continue to read it, as well as, watch YouTube vids for the group.

It's unlikely I ride to the track - but if I do it'll be to/from from my Aunt/Uncle's home just 5 minutes away (not to/from my home 90 minutes away). That said, seeing how the lights will be taped up and I fully believe you that I'll be exhausted in every way; I'll just bring a trailer.

    Looking forward to it!

I have yet another newbie question .... but does everyone show up in their race suit and gear stay in it all day? Or do people generally show up in normal clothing and change into their suit after the morning intro meeting? I was planning to come already suited up but wasn't sure if I'd be the only one showing up already geared out.

Yea, you'd be the only one showing up in full dress.
There will be lots of time to get your duds on. Novice is the last group out on the track.

For Novice you will have 20 min after the first Novice meeting to gear up for your session.. you can get away with keeping it on prior to Lunch (bungee cord around the waist is your buddy) an peel the top off. That is what I have been doing now up until lunch and it’s good up until the Deathstar Heat rolls in around 1:00 or so. The pits at Road Atlanta get about as much breeze as a bottom of a well in Hell... So honestly wear under Armour to make getting them off and on easily and peel out of them as much as possible. I would do this prior to your classroom sessions as well. I am not kidding about hydrating 3 to 4 days in advanced,, it’s n9 joke. I have suffered heat exhaustion at Road Atlanta as well as a couple other tracks and it was no fun. I just had a buddy suffer from it at the WERA round at Barber a few week s back..it’s no joke. I had to drive him and his rig back and he cried the whole way home. It was not pretty... the heat here will cramp you up and ruin your week if you don’t prepare for it. Be ready and if you are hydrated keep drinking water.. Pit close to a outhouse or keep a lot of empty Gatorade bottles in your trailer like I do. If your not constantly pissing your not hydrated... no joke.. most of all Have fun! I would love to be there with you guys but I have to move my daughter into Purdue that weekend... might even take some Gatorade Bottles up there! hA...

So, where does one park (I'll have SUV + UHaul motorcycle trailer)? I'm guessing main paddock area?

    - Does anyone know where power outlets are (so I can plug in a fan)?
    - What about restrooms? I plan to drink a ton of water :)

Yep main paddock. There are 110 outlets along the fence against the hot pit. 50amp and 110s pedestals down the center. AC’d rest rooms are just to the left of where it says main paddock in the picture. Port-a-johns scatted through the paddock. Showers are across the footbridge to the outside paddock at the top of the main paddock.

Don’t rely on any of the 110’s on the fence... I don’t think those have worked for quite some time. If you want 110 look for a pedestal and get there early get.. if you show up Sat Am very doubtful you will get power. F that the case and your in a bind your more than welcome to hang out under my canopies. I will be there Solo Fri-Sat PM

So if I get there Friday - can I leave stuff parked there overnight? I'm staying with family who live 5 minutes away, not camping out there.
But if I get there Friday
    (a) am I allowed on the track to setup?
    (b) can I leave my canopy and/or anything else overnight (i.e. trailer? bike?, etc)?

Yes... you can set up and come and go 24 7 after you get your arm bandafter 5 PM Fri... if you do set up a canopy make sure you lower it and anchor it down good to something heave, trailer etc. [not to your bike} The storms that come through can move anything...

Awesome - thank you! In that case, I will come up Friday afternoon.

And I know this may sound crazy - but I may leave the SUV + trailer there and just ride the bike in from my relative's house each morning. They live literally 10 minutes away if I hit every traffic light. I imagine a 6am commute over to the track is more like 5 minutes.

Or if that does sound unreasonable - I'll figure something else out. But knowing I can come Friday and I can leave stuff on the paddock where I park is helpful!
