Last year I rode my 02 ZRX1200 on the track . The best time I turned was a 1:47 @ M-O, which I guess is decent enough. Anyway here is my question . Am I doing the right thing by switching to a 91 FZR600. Here is my logic

    1. I really dont want to hurt my ZRX on the track because I really do love this bike. ( though its not totally retired, will probably come out to play once or twice)

    2. By riding a track only bike , I dont have to waste time getting my street bike ready for the track

    2. By going to a relatively underpowered bike , I will learn more , i.e a simple twist of the wrist will not be enough . The Rex has gobs of torque and it does not really matter what gear you are in ,it just pulls. I want to be able to work on my cornering speed and gear selection.

For those of you have gone that way , will I be incredibly frustrated by the lack of power or will I have an epiphany :)

I have never ridden a fully faired bike with clip-ons so this is going to be interesting to say the least.

The FZR is pretty well set up , FZ1 shock at the rear and the front end is re-sprung with race techs and a fork brace. Engine is pretty stock, just V+H SSR2 with Pods and jetted correctly Its not slow , just no where near as fast as the Rex

The main problem with a Fizzer6 is the odd tire sizes. You'll have to settle for Bridgestone Battleaxes or Avons, as best I remember. I applaud your choice of geting a trackday-only bike, but any more modern 600 that runs 120-17 front and 180-17 rear tires would be a better choice for what you want to do.

Hey, I RACED Fizzers. Won championships on them. You'll never find a more devoted Fizzer lover in the world than me. But the tire issue makes them undesirable in the modern 17" era.

Actually I have a 17" Rim on a Metachex(sp) swingarm so thats not an issue . Its a GSX600F rim (I think) Running a set of BT-014's . 160 on the rear and 110 on the front .

    Should be interesting ,thanks

As bought, thats a beefy looking swingarm

Love the Bling Frame , also discovered Progressive Cartridge emulators in the front forks as well

Good point about tires. Get a newer 600 01 or 02 R6 or GSXR600 ( there is a lot of parts for the GSXR's out there) You need to go to a smaller bike it will help with your corner speed as you stated. But it is not as easy to ride as your Rex with all that power. after a few days on the smaller bike you will be able to ride as fast or faster then the Rex.

Those 014's are great street tires Justin, but I fear you'll be lacking in grip at track speeds.

Hey Chirs , yeah Ive heard they take a while to get warm. So Im gonna be back marking it for a while in Intermediate to see how they work out. I wonder does STT stock other sizes other then the usual 180 /120 if I dont like them . I ran Bt-020's on the Rex the first time I TD'd and did manage to knee down on those. Im not super agresssive on the track so hopefully they'll do the trick. If not , I have a tire changer at home . Ill probably get a set of pilot powers for it and mount them myself , after the first track day @ Putnam

CYA at MO , we need to work out garage arrangements with the lads

For the 31st and 1st my buddy Rick from Tennesse is coming up to do these track days with me. He is coming with his wife and my wife and daughters will be there too. We talked about renting a garage but my wife thinks the ezup out in the open will be better for the kids. They like to ride their bikes and whatnot and I'd hate to have one of them get in the way of someone going/coming from their garage on their motorcycle.

Thats cool , if we can work it you can put your EZUP close to where we garage and visit with us. That way you can do any needed work in the garage. Ill be breaking out the Rex for the ROK day at least. Actually gonna take it and the Fizzy to Putnam Apr 7,8 . Ive never ridden the Fizzy in Track conditions so the Rex is gonna be a back up

    Cheers

You can get a set of Powers in 160's now. Until you start really pushing that FZR, they should be more than good enough for where you are in the learning curve. As a bonus, they last FOREVER! They will also teach you a little restraint... when they start to slip, it is time to back off a bit for a couple laps!

I didn't like the BT014's on the track either. I noticed they tend to get pretty greasy. The pilot powers really are great though!! :D

Yep, I totally agree with the above, I run lower middle A group and have only noticed the Powers slip only a little (this on a 90+ degree day), just backoff and continue on. Last year I put 6 trackdays per rear, and ~8 on the front, this is on a 600.

    Regards,

Well Im gonna pick up a set of PP's ( like em too) and bring them along . Ill try out the stones in the morning and if I dont like em , Ill have the friendly local tire man change em . Im gonna bring the Rex to Putnam as well ( as a back up ) so I wont even be down riding time :) . Just need to borrow a front stand . I do see that the PP's also come in 150 /60 size , I wonder if that would make more sense for the Fizzy , after the original tire was a 140/60ZR18 on a 4 Inch 18" rim. The current Rim I have is a 17"x4.5

With a 4.5 inch rim, a 160 will be ideal.

i ran an fzr400 last year. no probs at all. i didn't really mind getting outgunned on acceleration. for the most part, i had a lot of fun passing faster bikes.

if they only knew it was a 400 that just went by. i should have put my displacement on the tail :)
