after starting normally all day, my '07 GSX-r600 refused to start (via the starter motor) before the last session. when keyed, fuel pump was strong, all dash info was normal, but the starter button yielded nothing. we bumped it and all was well. now, I'm tearing into it but can't figure it out. I think it's the starter button. battery is at 12.2v after a week sitting in garage. gurus, show me the way.
the starter button in the gsxrs has a tendency to get moisture in them If you pull the assembly off the handle, its just a couple screws and you can see how it transfers power from one contact to the other. this is very common on the GSXRs that have been tipped over on the right handlebar. the screws seem to loosen up a bit. about 20 mintues and you should know whats going on. starter I found this: http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=286518 I'll check it out later. thanks for the info troy
starter starter button checks out. no melting; copper looks good; proper continuity when depressed/not depressed. on to the starter relay.
Have you tried a direct hot lead from battery to starter? IF the starter turns over then at least you will know the starter is good.
starter seca, I will do that next. just checked the starter relay. it's good. even though it's a problem, I'm enjoying doing this elec stuff for the first time. worst case: I bump start my bike til I figure this out.
Im not familiar with the GSXRs in particular, but make sure you disable or jumper the clutch switch and sidestand switch. -Tom
starter starter motor turns over when connected to battery. that's good! clutch is definitely jumped properly, as well as sidestand switch. I guess that leaves the sidestand relay. The turn signal/side-stand relay is composed of the turn signal relay, side-stand relay and diode. this is a track only bike, so lights don't matter. if the turn signal/side-stand relay is bad, can I simply pull it out of the loop, jump the sidestand terminals right there and call it good? I don't know about the diode. if it's out of the loop, will it negatively affect things? (I just learned that a diode is like a valve, permitting current to flow only in 1 direction.)
The diode can cause it to not start. If you have a stock instrument cluster and it is not plugged in, it may cause this as well. If you have the stock stuff, plug it in to see what triggers it. The diode stuff is always fun to get correct. Just dont pull out any hair in the process.
dude, I have little hair left to pull out. I'm about done w/this "learning experience". I just reattached the radiator. I'll put back the gas tank tomorrow and try to start it.
I have problems with the switch in the clutch. At times it won't start so I just let the clutch snap out a few times and it usually starts.
Longshot but there is usually one more hop in the chain of things that let the starter run - clutch in, neutral switch, and sidetand - might want to check the pin out for the neutral one just in case
success! it must have been the jumped side-stand switch. after all the testing of parts in the loop and their reinstallation, the bike started normally. the only thing I changed was to unwrap, check, and rewrap the side-stand switch jump. I guess it vibrated loose over the months. thanks for all the suggestions. now, Emily won't have to push start me before every session.
