Well Lance, now another of my friends has damaged himself in essentially the same way. Sounds like he got it even worse than you though.... http://www.ccsforum.com/index.php/topic,13655.0.html
yeah, it looks like he's in a bit worse shape than me... I hope he recovers soon. I should have surgery this week to put my clavicle back together and hopefully a speedy recovery after. I hate this not being able to do anything! I did have a nice barbeque/pity-party yesterday.. the standard fare: 12hour smoked/pulled pork, booze beans & slaw, potato salad & more. i fgured after all that's happened in the last week, I could either sit at home alone and feel sorry for myself, or make a feast and invite as many people as i knew over, and celebrate what makes life great. thanks to everyone here too, that have offered their support. you people make life great, too. Lance
update: oh yeah, I almost forgot. I finally got an appointment for surgery, on june 9th. I was hoping they'd say "we'd like you to come in this afternoon...) this is pretty frustrating, not being able to work...
So when's the next BBQ? June 9th, and then you're out several weeks after that? I can't believe they are making you wait that long.
me neither. I guess all of their surgeons are out on holiday... I don't understnd why it wasn't done in the hospital in grand rapids, in the first place. had they done that, i would have been recovering for the past week-1/2, instead of sitting around in this hazy, darvoset limbo.
I had the same issue at Grand Rapids Emergency Room. I crashed in turn 9 last May, broke my collar bone and went to GR Hosp. They gave me a bunch of drugs and a figure 8 bandage and sent me home. Now that the collar bone is healed I have a big lump. Probably needed surgery and a plate but the Doctor never recommended that. Oh, well. It's now healed and not a big deal. You're doing the right thing by having the plate put in. Good luck and get your a$$ back on the track!!!
Titanium, that's good for 6 hp, right? Well, I had my surgery yesterday. the docs sliced me open & bolted my collar bone back together the way it's supposed to be, with a titanium plate & screws. It hurts like hell, but then i don't have three pretty nurses hovering over me bringing shots of morphine every few hours like I had in the hospital... the doctor said that I'll be able to return to work in two weeks, but more imprtantly I'll be able to return to the track in 4! that means possibly Autobahn in July, but I may wait til the Grattan LED weekend, just to be safe. I'm looking forward to getting better and back on the bike. I still need a few parts, but most everything has been ordered. Thanks everyone, for all the support! It's really helped me through these challenging times. STT is truly like family! Thanks, Lance
Lance, glad to hear everything went well. Look forward to seeing you back on the track. On your upright bike, that is...
Update: i went to my post-op appointment yesterday (surgery was last Friday) they removed the bandages & took more x-rays. The prognosis is good. it's healing very well and I should be able to return to the track in 4 weeks. here's the before x-ray: the bones had completely separated and were kept apart by some muscle tissue that had worked it's way in between. there were also a few fragments there as well. After, with everything bolted together, ultimately it'll be better than new: I'll also have a cool scar to impress the ladies, once I'm single again and to remind me of my stupidity...
I've never heard of anyone having to wait that long before getting a collar bone bolted back together. They obviously weren't waiting to see if it would heal on its own, since the ends weren't even close. In the end it will heal better pinned, but I'd look for a new doctor for future reference. He missed the X by quite a bit, and apparently left a couple of paper clips in there.
LOL. for what ever reason, they didn't do the surgery in grand rapids, like they'd done for Troy, two weeks previous to my incident. Instead, I had to go back home, get a referral and wait for an appointment... It seems that the specialist was on vacation at the time. what really pisses me off, what that they didn't let me know about this upgrade of swedish hardware:
Nice touch! Of course now you'll have to pay someone to set it up properly, or it won't do you much good. Hopefully you won't need it though.
Now that is some funny $#!% Looks like the doc in that pic was not too familiar w/ the swedish bits though.... left the preload adjuster knob under the skin! Glad to hear things are going well and you will be back out soon! Looking forward to your return to the track!
