I'm curious to see if anyone has recommendations for an inexpensive lap timer. Are the cheap ones on Ebay like this one any good? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cc7d8e8cc&vxp=mtr I just want simple lap times at this point. I can't justify paying for a GPS lap timer. The XT racing IR lap timers look good but are they worth the price difference compared to the cheap ones?
I have only used XT and have always been happy. The XT has a mini for around 100 bucks. The cheapo 50 one I wouldn't touch. When it craps out you have to buy another. That's the price of an XT mini where if it breaks you can have it serviced if out of warranty.
^^^ I wouldn't. Keep looking at the WERA classifieds, I got a used XT with shipping for $75.00 But they do sell fast, be ready for that.
Sounds like one of those getting what you pay for situations. Thanks for the advice on the WERA classifieds. Although if I go through STG it will just get me another entry into the drawing for that R1 :eyebrows: Should I pick up a transmitter too or does somebody usually have one set up at most trackdays? I've never used a lap timer yet so I haven't really payed much attention but I've heard guys at rider's meetings saying that they're putting one out.
I got an app for my iPhone. Cost about $5 for the app, and $1 for each track. Worked OK for what I was needing: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id523627374
That's pretty slick. Don't think I would want to risk losing or breaking my phone in a get off though.
You also need an external gps, since the one in the phone is not sending signals often enough. While i like the idea, i think it's PITA, compared to a gps lap timer.
I have an XT mini. Unlike the description on STG - it actually came built in aluminum, not plastic. It has a pickup on each side of it, so once you know what side of the track the beacon is, you hit two buttons, and you are ready to rock. Easy and for a 100 bucks, fairly cheap. I also bought the fork clamp, which makes for a super sturdy mount.
I considered the phone option at one point too but crashing with my phone on-board could be bad. I think the XT mini will probably be the best choice for me.
I agree on the XT Mini. Very simple and plenty good for track days. Had mine for 3 years and it still works just like new.
The one you posted first will work as long as it's the ver.2 or the corded one (looks like the XT sort of). I had the non-corded version and it worked but you had to really aim the IR sensor at the beacon. Personally I'd go to ebay for a used XT but the cheapo one will do the job.
