The Advanced group is intended for the club racer or very accomplished track rider. The pace is fast and there are no restrictions on passing. Be polite and keep pace. Riders in the A group must be comfortable passing and being passed in very close proximity to other riders and at very high speeds. If you are riding a bike of a lower CC then it is imperative that you have good lines and be predicable.
EXACTLY... The person who took the video said he didn't even mind the pass. Its someone else who wants to bitch about something that didn't effect him in any way. End of story, delete thread.
Ok more info for you guys. First this is a Fox Powersports day not an STT day. I know who all the riders are that are involved including the 2 slow guys. There was 6 of us hot lapping between 1:22-1:25. The camera bike and the bike in front of him had never been to Grattan before and are on pace for aprox 1:40 when we catch them. Being new these two riders are having a hard time with lines. I personally gave these two a tow earlier in the day to try and help them with lines etc. If you notice he doesn't hold as tight a line around the bus stop as you should. If the coach is going around the outside he might have run out of room. I asked the offending coach what happened and he said "I got myself in a situation where I had no where to go". Was he riding to hard? Maybe? Did he get surprized by the very slow rider? Maybe? Will he think twice about the outside bus stop pass? Likely!! In the end no one got hurt and I'm impressed by the composure of the rider being passed. :thumb::thumb: for not freaking out.
wow 100% right on that. Something obv caused that move to be necessary and to commit to that at speed and get it done is amazing. I almost spit my coffee out and simultaneously crapped my pants at work. Would have made for an awkward morning.
Oh believe me... I learned a hard lesson Saturday passing a slower rider... He sat up on me changed his line abruptly so I swung out to miss, entered bus stop to hot and.... down I go... #FAIL on my part not his.
Grattan is hard to learn. If you're new and an "A" rider at a different track but have never seen Grattan it's possible to turn 1:40. Roger on the camera bike turned a respectable 1:32 on Sat. BTW ineedanap your screen name kills me.:lmao:
Hey you know it is the straightest line through there... Just remember when / if you do get out in the grass stay on top of the tire, don't give it too much gas (coast) and don't touch the front brake.
Safe and corteous I think is what they say down south. However I have been to Grattan and if someone can come around you on the grass at the bus stop I would guess you were either WAY off pace or they make a living at it. Consider he had to turn back in on grass while passing. Of course I was not there so could be 100% wrong.
It's easy to criticize and point fingers. Fact of the matter is that things happen. I've ended up in the grass, some were my fault, some were others. You intend to go somewhere, you miss your mark, you expect someone to be on line and hit their apex, they don't. We all make mistakes, some are small, some are big. This is how we learn. You try something, it doesn't work, try something else. You make a mistake playing checkers, you lose your checker. You make a mistake riding motorcycles and you may fall down. You may cause others to fall down. No one wants to see this happen, but it is a fact of life. If you don't accept this fact, you're only kidding yourself. There are no absolutes, good or bad. This time, no harm, no foul.
When I was in novice for my second ever track day last summer someone slammed on their brakes mid turn through 4 because of congestion/letting other groups pass and I had to cut to the inside of the turn and go over the gravel to not hit them. There was 2 guys on my left and I was in the front of my group for follow the leader drills in the afternoon. Not something I would ever even think about trying to get ahead.
please don't point the finger at the camera rider.... he held his line, didn't brake, didn't speed up, or FREAK OUT. he is an accomplished rider on a borrowed bike, first time at grattan, no where near his first time on the track. if this was a ktm cup bike, or 250 or motard, or whatever... the speed difference would be similar. it doesn't matter what the laptimes were/are. advanced is for riders like the camera person who are safe, consistent, can hold and ride the race line, and ride within their limits of their skill level in their group. like Steve stated... I am impressed with how he handled the situation. he didn't post this vid, or show it to stt staff, to make a HUGE deal about how the event went down, he posted it for learning, and awareness. it is ALWAYS the passing riders responsibility to make a safe pass, in ALL SITUATIONS.
