they aren't as accurate as ground triggered RF lap timers....period. they might be 'close enough'....or 'usually right on'....but just be clear, when you have 3ft accuracy vs 3" accuracy....take it from a measurement systems guy: there's a difference. again...not saying the gps based isn't worth getting. just making the point of the small sacrifice being made with the gps units.
For our purposes, and just about anybody's purpose short of "The Aliens", they are more than accurate enough. Like Dave said, his was 6-hundredths of a second different. I could see it being an issue if it was a whole second or two. But 6-hundredths, that isn't even worth discussing. That is like arguing that somebody's Liter bike makes 0.06 more HP than somebody else's. Sure, somebody can sit and argue all day "it makes more power"...and technically, that is accurate. But who is going to notice it?
I wasn't trying to say they were as accurate simply that for my purposes they are accurate enough especially with the extra data I can capture to pinpoint areas I need to work on. In my case I have mine wired to additionally capture RPM, throttle position and gear position. And just a question, how many people have access to ground triggered RF laptimers when they aren't racing? To my knowledge XT and the others all use an IR beacon.
...and as I said early, mine is always in the same tenth as the ones used by WERA. OK, everyone beware, the GPS based lap timers ARE NOT as accurate as the others. There may be a few hundredths of a second difference between your TRUE lap time and what shows up on the timer. So you may have not actually ran a 1:34.69....you might have actually run a 1:34.75. ...but then again, you might have actually run a 1:34.63. Im glad we got that out of the way.
If its a 5Hz GPS receiver I dont see how it can be more accurate the +/- .2 seconds since thats its sample rate. Unless the software corrects for the .2 sec gap. I picked up a Qstarz BT-Q1000ex to try this year, for $160 same 5Hz sample rate but crappy software and no display (you need a lap top). There are apps to use your smart phone as a GPS lap timer also.
i think it's funny when people with probably no engineering experience whatsover laugh ignorantly at people who were automotive engineering managers specializing in measurement systems for 20 years. adults are talking here, jimbo....go play in the street.
Agree or not. Tenths or hundreds of a second at a track day. Really??? Ridiculous argument I guess without that timer we don't know who won the trackday Damn that sux
Thanks for the recommendations and the entertainment.... I'll end up with the Mini or the Ultra. Anybody got pics of either of these mounted?
I have the Ultra and also have the long cord which I would recomend.. You can simply velcro the display on your dash and then run the cord under the tank, seat and tail.. I used a rubber grommet in the tail to keep the cord tight.. Also velcro on the tail and a zip tie as well.. I had mine come off the velcro a couple times.. I have this same set up on my 1000.. I have had this same Ultra on my TLR, 750, 600, SXV and now my 1000. Make sure you dont throw it around and it should last awhile..
I think it has been sort of repurposed as a kitchen timer. Think......DING, boil is done! For lap times he shares the same calendar I use.
I just look at it to see how long it takes for one of your Honda's to break down... I dont care about my times....
