Hello all, as the title says, I'm getting started on a side project and I would like to log data from my zx6r. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get started on this? Here some more details: - yes...I'm googleing like crazy but not very successful - I just wanna read data (no writing on the bus). Data like, engine RPM, gear, throttle position,... - does Kawi use CAN as communication protocol? I don't need all the answers to the my questions I just need to get started with something and then I'll figure things out as I go... thank you in advance, Guido
usually a lot of that stuff is a frequency or a 0-5vdc signal. with a schematic, meter, and a micro controller you could go to town on it. lots of the Can Bus is unusable unless you have the time to map and understand the data it is sending you. there is a never ending stream of Hex variables on the can line. http://www.instructables.com/id/Hack-your-vehicle-CAN-BUS-with-Arduino-and-Seeed-C/?ALLSTEPS
Yea I know that the CAN can be a mess. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I have a lot of experience decoding CAN messages so it will be long but possible for me... Acquiring every signal in the raw version of it (voltage or freq) is for sure an option but I wanna keep it as last resort. I have been reading misleading info on the internet...as usual. Somebody says that Kawasaki uses a proprietary CAN version, others say that they even use a different bus...I'm really getting lost...
Just buy an XT GPX Pro data logger and wire it up to the bike. You can get up to 8 channels! That's what I have on my bike. There are fancier ones out there as well if you're willing to spend like $1500.
Love the GPX Pro! It really brings out the nerdiness in me! ...I only got it recently and only used it twice so far, but I think I've spent about as much time analyzing the data as I did riding the bikes (after the track day was over of course)! haha I had a Starlane unit as well. Although it was just a GPS lap timer like the Stealth 2, not a data logger. My opinion is Starlane makes some pretty good devices but their software needs a lot more work. It's clunky, has a few glitches, and some things are in Italian (wtf right??). Unfortunately the software is universal and is used with all their devices and that was pretty much the main reason why I didn't go with their data logger. The XT software is much more user-friendly, as is their customer support.
