What's up everyone? I'm Chris and I am brand new to STT. I am looking forward to riding this season with some of ya! I live in Dayton, OH and have been riding for a couple years. I guess my best bet would be to sign up for the mid-ohio track time? I've been to a couple of AMA races there and it looks awesome! So far I have ordered the STT membership with the T-shirt - that's it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Should I sign up for both Sat and Sun events? What is the novice level like and should I just rent leathers or buy first? Also, should I purchase racing boots and what r some good kinds?

Sold my 2000 ninja 750 for 2005 gsxr 1000 last season. Love the new bike OMG!!!

    Thanks,

    Chris

Leathers. Sticky subject. Yes, you'll want your own. Buying them is the hard part.

The point of leathers is that they protect you in a crash. Most will. The problem comes after you get up. Most off-the-rack leathers are one-crash suits. Price doesn't seem to dictate this, either. You can spend $1500 on a suit that comes apart severely after one crash. The problem is that you're buying flash over sturdieness.

My advice is to buy Vanson leathers. Mine have survived SEVEN crashes, and with minor repair are still totally dependable. Not pretty, but dependable.

Other good choices are Barnacle Bill, Syed, and Z Custom. These are all custom suits. Expensive, but so worth it. The best off the rack suit I've seen is MotoGP. If there are armor options for the suit you choose, go for the top-line armor every time! And don't forget to buy a really nice back protector!

Boots? They are all pretty good. Get a pair with full armor. The sport touring boots aren't armored up like the racing boots, so they won't protect you as well. I have a size 13 wide foot, so Oxtar is about my only choice, and they are good boots. Alpinestar is the industry leader in boots, but they are pricy and run small and narrow.

You know that as a member, STT can sell you a lot of the gear you'll need at a discount price, right?

    Chris,

You couldn't pick a better place to start than Mid-Ohio next summer, especially since it's being repaved.

Two days are always better than one, if you have the time & the money.

Our Novice group is a great place to get started. It's controlled environment will make it less overwhelming when first getting started. For no additional charge, you'll benefit from simple instructional steps that will build on each other as the day progresses. You'll be grouped with riders with similar riding abilities, & can always move from group to group as the day goes to stay at a pace that you're comfortable with. Don't be shy & you'll get the most out of our help.

You can rent leathers from STT to get started, & then see what others are using to decide what to buy once you're hooked. STT also rents and sells back protectors, which you'll definitely want to buy if you end up doing more events.

The Gaerne boots are hard to beat, especially for the price. Very comfortable right out of the box, and good protection. They're also available through the STT Store.

We always look forward to welcoming new riders. Bringing some friends along to ride with always makes for a more enjoyable event.

    See you at the track!

I would agree that Sportbike Tracke Time has one of the best novice groups. Don't be in a big hurry to move up. There is several levels in that group if one seems slow I am sure that there is one you will be happy with. I am going on my fifth year and I am still using what I learned in the novice group everytime I go out the track.

Your bike is a great bike but not the best thing to start on the track with. I started on a ZX9R and though I was doing realy good until I took my 636 out. I found that I was relying on the power of the 900 and was not that smooth. I am on a zx6rr now and loving it.

I use AGV leathers and have crash tested them with out any real issues. I bought cheap gloves my first time and paid for that.First time down I wore right threw the palm after that I bought Alpinestar SP 1 with Kangroo on the palms and they are great. If I could afford a suit made of kangroo I would have one. Boots buy something with toe slidders. Make sure to buy a back protector too.

A big thing is don't be shy at the track ask questions there is a lot of knowelge waiting to be tapped into, but it doesn't aways come looking for you. As they say you most go slow to go fast and it took me awhile to see how true that statement. Have fun out there and if you can afford two days go for it but that doesn't say that you have to ride every time out. Tried =crashes and cost lots of $$$$$$$
