I know I'm opening a can of worms with this question but I'm looking to step up my tire choice. I've always used q2-q3s on my Ducati 999 for the track and I'm looking to "upgrade" as I feel I'm ready to step up. I only use my bike for the track and I don't ride in the rain so slicks are not out of the question. I was considering trying the Pirelli track day slicks. Just wanted to get some opinions on them.

    This to consider for me:

I do not ride if it rains ( I know you learn a lot in the rain but taking more of a chance crashing isn't worth it to me)

I have warmers.... Not the greatest set (bought off brand on eBay for 150 bucks) they work pretty well tho imo.

I run mid to fast pace intermidate depending on track.

    Thanks for the input!

I know the Pirellis are the TD tire of choice in the Texas paddocks, just not sure which model. The Superbike Pros(the slicks that are meant to run without warmers) are garbage. I prefer the Dunlop GPAs after moving up from the qualifiers.

Q3's should be fine for you till you get into mid A.

Just ask Chello! That's what he runs on his Panigale and he's a definitely mid pack A group or higher.

They don't last for me unfortunately. I also don't have traction control ether like the panigale has.

I am on my second set and like them. You give up a little grip for tHe longevity but they do last. I am on my 5th TD on my current set and will likely get at least 3 more. I am runnning a mid I pace. Pirelli does say you don't NEED warmers with these but I use them for the peace of mind on my first lap out and to reduce cycling.

It's all about what makes you comfortable. I used the superbike pros, got good wear. They have a predictable amount of slip. I switched to the Michelins because they are available at the STT tracks. I've been pretty happy with the cups and slicks. Great amount of grip.

a friend got 7 days (yes we flip as needed) on is Pro's. CBR600 slow to mid Intermediate rider. for the price and longevity he loves them. I like them as well, but I am fast novice to slow intermediate and just felt my pace did not utilize them vs Q3. When the Q3 went on sale last year for 207.00 delivered it was a no brainier for me. My friend stayed with the Pro's. and as noted above he does use warmers on low setting.

I totally disagree with the Superbike Pro's being garbage. Me and some friends did a 3 hour endurance race on 1 Superbike pro rear (SC 2 front) and we were only 2 sec/lap off the Expert sprint races the next day. Placed 1st overall. They last a very long time.

I've read a bunch of good reviews on them actually just wanted to see what the stt family has to say. My problem is I'm pushing the q3s to the point I am getting step outs. I dont feel confident in the grip feedback i am getting from a street/track tire and feel it's time to upgrade. Just trying to do it in the most cost effective way possible. I don't think I need a full on slick just yet just something with alittle more grip that's why the super bike pros are appealing to me

I'm not speaking from first-hand experience, so feel free to disregard my comment.

I stand by the GPAs if you are familiar with Dunlops.

Dude that's going to happen on any 1000cc bike that doesn't have traction control even on race tires. :wheel:

He's right. My R1 can step out on NTEC slicks if I grab a handful of throttle.

Oh I know that but even at slight lean coming out of corner it spins up with moderate to "easy" throttle. Also with tip in the front doesn't grab like it did when I was at a slower pace.

Compared to what? It's a track day tire meant for expended life, and it's not going to have the stick of a full race tire. The Superbike Pro's have been compared to Supercorsa SP street based tires, just in the form of a slick with no tread. They warm up quick and withstand heat cycling better.

As such, the Superbike Pros are a step up in sticky from street based Q2 and Q3 tires. They won't stick like SC dot race tires but they will last twice as long. Probably good enough for an low to middle advanced rider, but a racer is going to want (or require for rules) a real dot race tire.

I've considered Superbike Pro's for track days myself because I burn through SC's so fast on track days. Or likewise dropping the SC's and going back to SP's.

    All IMHO.

In regards to tires in general. I won't even talk about the fronts because they last forever with every brand. But when people tell me they are burning through tires left and right, I just don't get it. At a trackday, I use one rear tire for the weekend, sometimes without flipping. This is while running at a pretty decent pace on a litre bike. If you're burning through tires quicker than that, than suspension is way off, geometry is way off, suspension needs a refresh or all of the above. All the tires today, including race tires are capable of great grip and longevity.

Like Chris and Steve P this quote makes me think there's something else going on that needs to be addressed besides tires.

That counts as burning through tires to me. I get about the same wear, 2 trackdays, then flipped and one more on the other side.

If I were to run the Superbike Pro's, I would expect double that.

The faster you go the more it costs :wheel: reading some stuff on Fb you might want to call sportbike tire service next week. Sounds like Michelin has some good stuff that may be what your looking for aswell.

Suspension, pressures, etc. will help you in a variety of ways. Faster times, longer tire life, less money spent.

    My two cents.
