apparently the issues with patches on the newly repaved Track at Mid-Ohio aren't just a concern for track day riders. It's mentioned in today's Roadracingworld.com news section. http://www.roadracingworld.com/ discuss. Cheers, Lance
nope, (you know that)... just found it curious. of course, I'll reserve judgement til i find out for myself.
Granted, for a brand new completely repaved track, it ticks me off that it's ALREADY got sealer on it. There's really no excuse for that IMO. BUT... in the 3 dry sessions I had on there, I didn't have a problem with the sealer. Like Monte said, my biggest problem was wiping the silly grin off my face. That is such an amazingly fun track. I almost felt like crying when the rain started. It's one of my absolute favorite tracks now.
Wasn't being a smart-ass Lance I couldn't remember if you'ld made it out this season or not. Here is my take on Mid-Ohio... based on fact and personal experience for anyone to read and digest My list of tracks in the last two-and-a-half or so years is below. FWIW my favorite layouts are Mid-Ohio and Grattan in the CC direction. Runner-up's, Barber, Putnam Park, VIR South and Mosport. Tracks I have ridden in 04, 05 or 06 are as follows:: Autobahn North, South and Full, Grattan GingerMan Barber Road Atlanta Moroso Jennings Homestead BeaveRun HPT - Repaved Mossport (Canada) Las Vegas IRC Las Vegas Classic California Speedway AMA T-Hill Putnam Park Willow Springs Streets of Willow Pharump (Spring Mtn) CMP Pocono Blackhawk Road America Infineon Talladega GP Button Willow Summit Point Summit JC Nashville... VIR South VIR North VIR Full Laguna and finally Mid-Ohio.. A LOT. Only big ones missing are Miller and I have yet to ride more than a couple of laps on a borrowed bike at Miller but it's impressive for sure. I kinda had a problem with a borrowed bike at Tally last October and swore off riding other peoples stuff.. Clarkie can tell the story, I just look at my "Knee-Hole" any time I want to ride someone elses's stuff..LOL!! Currently Mid-Ohio has the best surface of any track I have ridden based on my experience as outlined above. It also IMO offer the best variety of any layout. It has elevation change, fast and slower corners, a ultra fast straight and a cornicopia of corners types. It has good facilities and a wonderful staff and management team that treats us very well. As a track day provider we do indeed look at tracks from a fun factor and of course a safety aspect and not an all out racing perspective. Tracks are living things and change, especially those subjected to (sometimes many) freeze-thaw cycles annually. Nope, Regarding curbs at Mid-Ohio. The new curbs are same overall height as old ones (I've measured and a couple of mm difference here and there max) but they reach maximum height much closer to the track surface due to the steeper angle of the curbing face. There has been some what is rather wild speculation about Mid-Ohio's repaving teqniques. EXAMPLE - A respected motorcycle publication published the following statement on thier website (paraphrased by me) without checking facts at the source: ?(AMA Test) riders report the old concrete patches have allegedly just been paved over.? Frankly I was unaware that there were any civil engineers specializing in paving currently racing in the AMA... with this in mind it would seem natural that an experienced reporter would check the validity of sources (and Editor would ask for same) before going tp press with such statements. Oh well, we all make mistakes. FWIW, I actually WATCHED some of the removal of these sections of the track and stated same to the reporter who then changed the story contect. If anyone here is seriously worried about dragging a brake lever on a curb at Mid-Ohio you are wasting your time at Track Days and need Jason DiSalvo's job! LOL!!!! I also think it safe to say that if you?re good enough to drag a lever you are also good enough to set your entry and apex line to avoid the curbing and/or dragging lever. I love Mid-Ohio and have for several years, even with teh old concrete and am glad it is the closest track from for me from my doorstep.
I pretty much like all the tracks on the list above.. there are a few that I just really like and became comfortable on quickly and that suit my riding style.. (whatever that is..LOL!!) better than others. I liked Mid-O a lot the first time I rode it five years ago. I was one of the guys who never found the concrete to be a problem. Grattan.. well it was my very first track and I've got more time there that any of the rest. Backwards ROCKS!!!!! Mosport is a blast since the Panos re-do.. it's a must ride. VIR South is a little gem, too bad they can't fit us in anymore. They really prefer cars to bikes and are taking any opportunity to replace bike events with cars. (Liability thing and the owner is not bike centric) Barber is really cool with a great layout. It suffers from a very sketchy pit-in and a less-than-ideal pit out (Alan Wilson's only consistant fault) which knocks it back a notch. Barber also lacks a horsepower straight, which tracks like Mid-Ohio, Grattan, Mosport, Putnam and VIR South all have. We have a great cluster of tracks in the South and Midwest... we're pretty fortunate.
Ditto to Monte and Mary, Mid-ohio is an absolutely supurb track. I haven't ridden a tenth of the tracks that Monte has but I would have to say that Mid Ohio has quickly became my favorite. As far as the surface, it's great. Smooth and flows flawlessly. It seems that everyone is stuck on the sealant. The sealant is fine and sticks just like the rest of the track. Actually I was finding it very helpful driving out of turns when the track was damp Tuesday Morning. The sealant is there to prevent the concrete patches from making a return appearance by preventing the asphalt from being polished down to the aggregate. If you haven't been to Mid-Ohio yet make plans!!! And don't worry about the sealant because the guy/gal that just passed you on the outside definately is not.
Sealer strips are easy to get around in the rain, or dry if they are bad. Anyone ever raced Grattan in the rain, that place is brutal with the strips but they can be ridden around. People need to learn to start sucking it up and bit and just ride through things.
Yeah, you're right you've got a point. It is a different thing to get used to at first, but you are right.
I guess my point is: how long ago did it get a repave? it's got cracks and sealer patches already? what, did they get the same people that pave the roads in Michigan to do the job? yes, I will find out for myself. given that Grattan is one of my favorite tracks and I'm not bothered by the patches there, I'm pretty sure that I won't mind a few irregularities. I don't mean to cast aspersions, I'm just surprised that it's happend so soon. Lance
MICHIGAN.....BAD ROADS!!!!! Never!!    You could turn some of those potholes into trout ponds if you wanted to.
