WERA posted their schedule and it looks like there's an event on 2-15 and 2-16 next year. Does anyone know if I would be able to obtain my license to race that weekend and, if so, how much that costs. Also, any other details folks could share about the process for a first timer would be appreciated. How many sets of tires for a weekend? Is there a qualifying session each day? Is it ok to run takeoffs for obtaining the license? Other nuggets of knowledge... Thanks in advance.
Yes, you would be able to. The schedule shows the abbreviation "rs" at the end of that event listing and that means there is a racer school. Their riders schools is $80 and a WERA license is $130 a year, that is discounted to $80 for a first time license holder. You will also need an AMA membership which is about $49 a year but you can buy that at the track during registration. Normally $60 a weekend to rent a transponder, provisional novices (which you would be get a free rental). Number of tires depends on bike and speed, no easy way to answer. No qualifying except for 1 or 2 classes at National events only. No problem running takeoffs for the school or anytime, totally up to you. There is a new racer thread here that has a couple of links to some good info racers put together including a new racer handbook: http://forums.13x.com/index.php?threads/new-racer-handbook.320532/ * Note the fees listed there are out of date on some things as this was done a couple of years ago, current fees are at: http://maps.wera.com/fees/?x=1098 Feel free to ask other questions.
Quick follow-up question. Do I have to register for that event through WERA in advance, or is that an event being hosted by a group similar to a trackday weekend? Thanks
The WERA rider school on Saturday is put on by WERA and you can register at the track (that's what Sean with WERA normally recommends). WERA has the track Saturday and Sunday for that event.
