    Hi,
I recently purchased a 07 r6 with a full M4 system. During cold starts, it won't idle unless you hold about 2% throttle. When warm, it idles perfectly. To resolve the issue with this system involves flashing the ecu to adjust the cold start tables (I believe).

Has anyone had any experience with this and/or can recommend who can resolve this? Nothing I need to get done in a hurry, just a bit of a pain.

    Thanks,

My 06 does the same thing...Idle bounces a few hundred RPM and will stall. I've got a full exhaust and PCIII. I had my ECU re-flashed and my bike dyno'ed by Huey at Marietta Motorsports. Mine did that before and after the tune. He said it's not uncommon with the R6. He knows his S**T so I took his word for it and just hold a tiny bit of throttle till its warm.

With the R6, we would hold the RPM's at about 3k until the temp reached 100c. We raised the idle a bit in the ECU (Kit box), but the R6 is known for being a bit weird to start.

One tip you may already know .. don't blip the throttle on initial start. Just hold the start button until it gets going. It's a weird R6 thing with a technical explanation I read somewhere - and forgot. :)

I've never had an R6 but have read numerous times on the WERA board about starting issues and some claim one fix is to hold the starter button down for a second or so after it actually catches will help.

One guy posted this explanation of why this supposedly works, no idea if this is factual or not. http://forums.13x.com/showpost.php?p=4167465&postcount=26

Thanks for all the replies. I'll follow up on a few of the suggestions and see how it goes.

I used to have that problem then I just started to do this with mine and it's worked like a charm for years.

i have an r6...ECU reflashed, full exhaust, etc...i do have to hold the starter longer than normal. when it fires up, i let it idle out till warm. if i dare touch the throttle on cold start, it'll flood and i'll have bigger problems. so i guess your short answer is do what works best for you and don't worry too much.

I have the same problem. When my bike was stock, it ran perfectly, the weirdness started when I went full system, and pc3.

So after a bit of research, here is a summary:
    - Surging idle is due to a lack of back pressure with a free flowing system. After talking to the guys at M4 exhaust, they recommend an insert that will increase back pressure, as well as quiet the pipe a bit.
    - Reflashing the ecu may or may not resolve the issue due to an increase idle speed when the flash is done (if it is part of the flash).

As mentioned in other responses, it is no big deal that this is occurring, just something to live with, or not.

I will be sending out my ecu to be flashed and will let you know results when I test it out.

On a side note, if the bike is stalling out when cold and is idling ok when warm, check the cam clearances on your valves, specifically the exhaust side. When these get out of spec, it can effect cold start up and idling.

    Thanks for all the input.
