Last weekend I got evaluated and bumped to the advanced group. I’m stoked and hoping to learn a lot from the more experienced riders. However, my next track day is in two weeks and I need to get my bike ready for the increased tech requirements.

In addition to what I have done, I need to safety wire the oil drain bolt and oil filter cover bolts.

Mostly, looking for advice on the oil drain bolt. The drain bolt on the RC390 is hollow as it holds an inline filter. Is there another passable method for securing a drain bolt without drilling into it? I understand RTV isn’t sufficient. I can’t find anyone that sells a solution, but I’ve seen many RCs out there.

Do you know how to weld? Tack welding a tab to the bolt would work, the safety wire to the tab. Just put it "down" far enough down to still be able to get a wrench on it.

JB weld might work with the same idea if welding isnt an option for you

    Thanks

I don’t know how to weld and will be out of town until just before the track day. But it sounds like I’ll need to do the weld job (hire out) lover the winter.

I'm sure you're not the first person that needs to wire the oil drain bolt on that bike. Aftermarket probably sells one that's readymade for safety wiring.

Also, it seems that the folks who had problems were just trying to drill a hole straight through the bolt head. The guys in that forum that were drilling through the corner of the bolt were able to use the stock bolt. You only need to drill through one of the corners of the bolt. I'll see if I can find the video I watched before I started safety wiring my bike. It's really simple and the tools are cheap.

At the 2:24 mark you'll see him wiring the steering stem bolt and you can see what I mean about only drilling the corner.

STG has a good video that walks you through it too.

And if you type "safety wire motorcycle bolts" in youtube you get lots of videos :)
