Daymn! After a year of struggling with brake fade, I finally found the culprit. Turns out I had a bent axle. Replacing it solved my fade issues. After a day at Mid Ohio spent coaching novice and rocking intermediate and advanced with no fade issues, I spooned on a fresh set of TD compound Michilen slicks and dropped in a set of SBS Dual Carbon brake pads for the Mid O LED day. Holy arrestor hooks, Batman! Those SBS Dual Carbons are the best brakes I've ever tried! It's like buying bravery in shrinkwrap! By the end of the day I was feeling like the God of outbraking, and I nearly got myself in trouble a few times when I got the bike out of shape while trailbraking. Honestly, I never once locked the tire up, but could generate so much force so precicely that I was laying down some absolutely SICK trailbraking, and had the front slowing down so hard that the back was trying to get around me and take the lead!! These pads are nuts! The harder you squeeze, the more woah you get. Feedback is tremendous. I'm absolutely addicted to these new SBS pads! From what I can tell, there are only three drawbacks to the SBS Dual Carbon pads: 1) You have to be careful not to get a God complex on the brakes. Like a 1000cc motor, pads this powerful can get you into trouble if you don't use them wisely 2) It takes about half a lap to get them warm enough to operate at full potential. Forget this and charge out of the pit lane, and you'll get about half the brakes you're expecting in turn one. Still, if you can't remember to spend half a lap warming up your brake pads, you're probably too much of a squirrel to be riding track days, ya know? 3) Because they need to be warmed up before they perform at their ultimate level, these pads aren't a good choice for a bike that sees street duty. Other than that, if you're skillful enough to appreciate the best brake pads you've ever tried, you need a set of SBS Dual Carbons!
Racer53 Wow what a story about brake pads after reading your post all I want to do is fit a set on my bike but (were do I get a set.) I do have a question. Do you think these pads are waring out the rotors faster then a set of OEM'S :?: Also have you used Performance Friction pads before. OR what other pads are you compairing the SBS to :?: THX for the post
I don't see any evidence that these pads are wearing out the rotors. SBS pads are distributed by Parts Unlimited, a major supplier to almost every bike shop in the country. Just go to your local bike shop and order them, but be sure to specify the dual carbon pads! And I'm serious. Don't use these pads on a street bike. They just don't work until about the fourth hard application, and that could get you in real trouble on the street. I talked to the SBS rep at Mid Ohio, and apparently SBS makes a high-performance sintered metal pad for the street that is supposed to be the best street pad money can buy. I haven't tried these. I've run EBC, Ferodo, Gold Fren, and Vesrah pads. Before this, Vesrah was my favorite. The thing that really shocked me about the SBS pads was that I never did a stoppie. Usually, when I brake that hard, I'll get some unwanted stoppie action. With the SBS pads, there was enough control to keep the bike just below the stoppie threshold consistantly and accurately. Very impressive stuff! And most unusual of all, I didn't have to squeeze the lever until my tendons bulged to get this kind of brake performance. That really helped to control arm pump, something I regularly struggle with.
racerk3 thanks for the reply I may not have time to get a set before this weekend as Im going to berverun are you planning on going?
Nope. I'm.... gulp.... done for the year. I've got a date with my Dad for the SCCA car racing runoffs in Topeka. It's our yearly Father & Son outing. Then I'm off to Daytona to crew for my teammates in an 8 hour endurance. No more riding for me, though. Is it spring yet? Oh God, this is only THE FIRST DAY of my off-season, and I'm already losing my mind!
LOL im only a few days behind you in the off seasion blues but there is winter sports to look forward to Do i here a SST skiing trip to whistler???? http://www.whistler.com/
I'd like to see what you think of the SBS pads compared to the Carbone Lorraine C44 race pads. The C44's have incredible feel for late braking and good power. If they could use anything, maybe a little more ultimate stopping power. I was thinking of trying the Vesrahs next yr or maybe even these SBS pads. :?:
Call brian at www.sportbiketrackgear.com he is a dealer for the pads, and part of sportbiketracktime to boot! The SBS pads are great, i have used ebc HH and Vesrah RJL's on my bike and i prefer the feel and stopping power of the SBS pads. And, just to repeat a very important point, the Dual Carbon pads are NOT good for the street!
Great write up on the pads, I to enjoyed a new set at Mid Ohio. Now let talk about the part where you talk about using spoons to put a tire on. I did hear of person that was running Carbone Lorraine C44 switch to the DC pads and loved them.
I not only used the Carbone Lorraine C44 pads....I distributed them! They were by far my favorite brake pads before I tested the SBS. I have never used anything like them...EVER. We stopped distributing the Carbone Lorraine pads and have gone to SBS exclusively now based on how good they were.
Wow! I bought my two sets of C44's from Lithium Mosports too. I'll give the SBS pads a go in the spring or maybe I'lll try them at Beaver this weekend. Decisions..
