Well, I tired to get a steering damper for my '02 SV650 for next weekend at the Beave, and 58cycle f'ed up and sent me one for the SVS. They are giving me a hard time about the return now and so I don't have the $$ to buy another one yet. When I read up on SV boards, they say the SV really does not need a damper. When I read up on track day boards, they say everyone needs one. I don't know who to believe. I don't ride very hard since I am still new at this, but will I be ok without one? Should I still get one eventually?

BadKitty - what group are you going to be riding in at Beaver Ruin? I run a first gen SV without a steering damper currently on the track (though it's probably something I'm going to invest in as I push myself and the bike ever further).
