First.... Below is the requirements for "Tires" taken from the STT website 2) Tires and brakes must be in good condition. Tires should be at least 75% of new condition. Any tires that are bluing from excessive wear will be disallowed. Slicks are allowed in 85% plus condition. We will have on site tire service at each track day, so if your tires don't pass, you will have the opportunity to put on replacement tires to pass tech. We had a situation recently..... with a Brad Martone at CMP We all know that we allow tires that are substaintially more worn than what is called out above... However, when your tires are down to the wear bar indicators.. you will not pass tech. PERIOD BTW - Calling our tech guys "a@#holes", threatening them and telling the guy running the event (who is the second largest Michelin race tire distributor in North America and a multiple class WERA Regional and CNC Dirt National Champion) that "you're just pissed cause you don't know sh$t about tires and I know more than you" is probably not a good tactic either. FWIW.... Mr. Martone, they are NOT "just like slicks when they get to the wear bars.." A tire that is 80% worn can go PAST the wear bars in a single 20-minute session. A tire goes from 75% worn to fullushagged MUCH faster than from "new" to 25% worn out. IF YOUR TIRES ARE AT OR BELOW 75% WORN YOU WILL NOT PASS TECH and if you abuse our tech staff you will be asked to leave... maybe for good.
Monte, I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but what is 75%. Seriously, I don't know. Is it a couple of mm above the wear bars or at the wear bar? It was just an honest question. I usually change them before that anyway, because they start sliding around, but I was just curious. Just so I know. Thanks.
BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! Priceless! Oh Gawd, it's like I can hear the words coming right out of Monte's mouth! Next he'd say, "Make something idiot proof, and Darwin will build a better idiot."
I wish I had a picture of the square tire the kid rode into GingerMan on. He was shocked that he had to buy/changed a tire. Everyone else was shocked that he actually rode it to the track that way.
A tire is good to go past the wear bars , there's a layer of cord that you can ride on when the rubber is gone . Monte's just being an a$$ . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . j/k......about the wear bars
Mark Sheldon has actually won many more titles, state and regional, than the ones I called out above....... Bet you thought I was referring someone else didn't you?
Sheldon could walk away from me riding tires off the wall at Nelson Ledges. If Bavol reads that, he'll be making a road trip.
Can somebody send Dave Bavol down here to handle any more tire questions? I think he has the proper maner that we are looking for.
but my front has plenty of tread....can i just put that on the back so i don't have to buy two tires? btw...sheldon is a slow ass punk.
So WTF would you want to do that . Lemme see the logic here , Im gonna save $250 on a set of tires , so I can get one more session in and possibly (Probably) prang my $3k+ bike and possibly do injury to myself and others. I dont want to be around that person thanks . Not very cool behaviour , dont want someone with anger management issues getting in my way, 600+ lbs of ZRX 1200R and rider take a while to get stopped ( though I do have good brakes )
well...actually it's only the left side of the front that's ok (tire from nelson sledges). so can i flip it and put it on the back? and use it on a mostly right hand turn track?
I have a theory: Start off with bald tires and ride a track in the opposite of normal direction. By the end of the day you have picked up enough tire stuff to have good tires again. The tire companies have paid off the track owners and that's why they will not let us ride in the other direction!!!!!
Actually the track owners won't let us run the other direction for safety reasons. The track develops a grain and has little traction when run in reverse. I tried this briefly at Pocono (about six feet) and fell on my ass. Had I been able to spin the bike 360 degrees without faceing backwards I believe I could have avoided falling down.
Mike, Its funny you say that as it reminds me of a recent Nextel Cup race where the track was repaved and the racers said there was close to no traction and no second line to allow for passing. So most of the night the track personel dragged bolted together tires around the track to "lay down rubber". When I saw the video clip all I could think was, "They're driving the wrong way. They should be driving the opposite way to get the rubber into the grain." Oh well.
so is it 75% worn will pass tech or 75% tread remaining will pass tech? why not just provide a minimum tread depth measurement so people can measure before leaving for the track?
