I have an 03' GSXR 600 track bike set up without a thermostat. It seems pretty cold-blooded out of the gate, often needing a full lap to reach operating temperature and loose the mid-range bog. Once it's up to 175 degrees it runs well and never overheats. Am I better off with a thermostat or just warming it up more thoroughly before going out? Jim B GSXR 600 #99
Let it idle in the paddock while getting your gear on. besides doing a reduced speed sight in lap is a mandatory IMO. You've been off the pavement 40 minutes. A great deal can happen in 40 minutes and things WILL change when you don't expect it. Maybe the bike taking longer is your "check valve" to a safer session
Do you have no thermostat or a modified one? There are a few things the tstat does. It slow coolant flow and builds pressure. Slowing the flow gives the coolant more time in the radiator to dissipate heat. You could actually have a hotter engine temp with the coolant running the faster. Now the pressure part... The pressure compresses bubbles in the system making them smaller and allowing for more surface contact. Reducing hot spots. Well that's at least the reason they are there.
Thermostat only gets your motor to operating temp quickly. Long as it's 75deg + outside you might be just fine. Now if its 30 deg out, it might not ever get to operating temp without a thermostat. < Which would be a bad thing. Pressure comes from your radiator cap, to reduce the boiling temp of the coolant. No real magic behind it.....
