Time for new tires?

So recently I went to Indy from Chicago and back again on the bike. Right now the tires have just over 4700mi on them. Got back and checked the damage, they got a bit squared off, not flat spotted but squared off. It is a bit noticeable while riding, but I don't think it affects me that much. Down the middle the treads are about 2.5mm. So what does everyone think, should I get new tires before I go to the track, or do you think I'll be ok?

This is certainly a "that depends" kind of question. If the bike doesn't turn in naturally it could really mess with your mind at a track day. If your bike is a bit slow to turn in anyway, this could make it worse.

On the other hand, my tires are mostly worn out on the sides and fine in the middle after a few track days (track only bike), so yours might get back to not being squared off by the middle of the day or so if you are riding it hard in the turns.

The biggest question is are you going to be worrying about your tires at the track day? If the answer is yes, then I would replace them. Trusting your tires is a huge part of riding well.

  3. Hmm, i usually didnt get much more than 4000 mi out of any rear tire on the street thats for sure. I'd probably opt for a new one too.

Yes. If you have to ask, you should replace them

Tires are the "first string" of "players" that keep you from eating pavement. If you're willing to start the "game" with 3rd string tires don't be mad when you lose.

Tires are the cheapest means of keeping you safe. Why chance it?

  6. If you can notice a difference its pry time for a new tire. Before you know it you will just get used to riding on a bad tire and it'll end up biting you.
