I've always heard that the contact patch of a 180/55 is wider than that of a 190/50 at full lean due to the extra height of the tire? Any comments/info on that train of thought?

If you look at the tire, a 190/50 is a wider tire in the middle with smaller sides. A 180/55 is a skinnier tire in the middle with more side to it. For those with the 190s who want to keep that size, try a 190/55. More bite on the sides when you leaning. That way you get the best of both worlds on your bike. I have a ZX10R and I like the 180/55 on it. I've never experienced any problems with it.

But, most importantly..... Everybody rides a bit differently. Try both the 180/55 and then a 190/55 and see if one suits you better. What works well for one person, may not work well for another.
