....of riding and over 100k miles, It was my turn to go pavement surfing. :( I can't complain, because I knew it was only a matter of time, and I don't know how I made it this long, especially with all the track days I've done. I'm kicking myself though because I know exactly how I screwed up and what I did wrong. Atleast I'm able to type this out on here.

I was at Barber Motorsports this weekend and track coaching in the Novice class. I had decided to bring the Vstrom out there just to get it on the track and see how it did. I also had my Gixxer 750 trackbike I just picked up from Wheedle. I was having a great time as usual working with the students and being on the track. I was instructor #2 on Saturday. I had planned to take the Gixxer out the next session to play in Advanced and probably teach on it since speeds would be picking up with the students. Too bad, later didn't get to happen.

We were on our 3rd session out and I had waved by all my students by watching the drill we were working on. I saw someone that needed some work when my last student had come by, so I was working on catching up to him. I had come out of the Alabama Rollercoaster and was working my way past riders through T9 &T10. As I was going into T11, I needed to fall back into line with the students so I wouldn't be going inside anyone, but I misjudged another riders turn in point. I thought for a brief second he might just leave me enough room to squeeze through on the inside, but he closed off my path (which is my fault as he had the lead line). I went in harder and deeper into the turn to keep my space from the rider. I had just gotten onto the concrete rumble strip on the inside, but it was evident if I didn't do something, we might both be on the ground and I sure didn't want that. I got on the brakes hard and thats all she wrote. The front end tucked and I was sliding across the track.

It was weird, because my first thought was, hmm, this is what it feels like to be sliding across the pavment. After my first tumble, I was looking backwards up the track. The first thing I saw was another rider looking right at me hard on the brakes. He was doing a good job stopping, but he looked like he was target fixating on me. I was trying to steer myself with my right hand to change my direction. Finally the rider went bewtween me and the bike and I went sliding over to the grass.

As soon as I stopped sliding, I jumped up. I started to walk towards the bike, but noticed the red flag was already out, so I just got myself out of the impact zone. A coner worker helped me get the strom up, but about that time the crash truck and ambulance showed up. The ambulance guys sugessted that they check me out and John on the crash truck offered to just ride my bike back to the pits since it was still rideable. Thanks!

I took a ride in the ambulance and other then being sore and jamming my shoulder pretty good, I was okay. I've got a nice bruise on my hip where I landed. My left shoulder is stiff and I've got some pain near my ribs, but I think I just jammed them with my arm. My leathers held up great.

Sorry to the riders behind me that I probably gave a big scare too, but from what I saw, you guys did great getting around me. The rider who I was trying to get under in T11, that accident was no part of your fault. You had the line and I just didn't judge your turn in and space you needed and I had to do something. I got on the brakes even though I knew what would probably be the end result of crashing, but it happens to all of us. Just don't ever stop on the track bud! Even if it's an instructor, we've got the ambulance crew there to take care of us! I'm glad you were still on 2 wheels and I hope you had a great rest of the day or weekend!

Thanks to Drew & Signguy for packing up my stuff. Thanks to Missis' B & Drew for taking the SV home that Beez rode over on so she could drive me home. Thanks to Loonis2ns & Vtwinsports for allowing me to rest in their camper for a short while. Thanks to Beez for driving me home and putting up with my butt. She was upset/angry that she wasn't there when it happened, but when she got there I had just gotten back to my pits, and she wouldn't have been able to do anything had she been there and just been worried till I got back to my pits. Thanks to the rest of the STT staff, cornerworkers and ambulance crew!

    Strom damage...

The upper left fairing, the crash bar, and the blinker took the brunt of it. The left end bar weight of course got a little bent.

The left side foot peg was a casulity.

Only a small mark on the left rear grab rail.

The damage to my helmet. I hit on the left side and then in one of my flips I hit the back and slid on it for awhile. I got to give a big thumbs up to the Scropion helmet. I hit my head pretty good and didn't have the slightest headache or anything.

And here's the gixxer with virgin tires that I should have been on. It's possible I may have stuck it with the gixxer, but who knows. The 19" on the strom with the Tourances just couldn't handle what I was asking at that exact moment.
