I emailed my insurance agent to see if Id be covered at track day events. From what Ive heard from many others, most insurance companies do cover them because they are instructional; not racing. Well, this was his response: "I'm sorry Bryan but there is no coverage under your insurance for this type of thing. Racing or track riding of any kind is not covered under your insurance. Most of my customers that do this type of thing buy a salvage title bike, fix it up, and use it on the track thinking that if they put it down they will write it off as a loss." That blows...! Does your insurance cover track days? If so, what company do you use?
If you have a get off , I would say it was a deer hit , or it fell off a trailer on a deserted road . Some companies will pay ,depends on who is handleing the claim and what mood they are in .
I have the same. I told my rep that i coach an advanced motorcycle safety course. He said that as long as there is no real racing involved, it can be covered. Check your health care too. Its all in how you word it.
Never make a misstatement of fact to an insurance company. Regarding State Farm the coverage for both liability and physical damage is clear and written in my policy declarations(6279AH.3 Motorcycle Coverage): "There is no coverage while any [motorcycle] insured under this policy is operated in, engaged in practice, or while preparing for any hill-climbing, jumping, racing, or speed contest, whether the contest is impromptu or prearranged." That's the exclusion. I've gone over this with both my agent and a SF claims person and track days are not excluded. Racing or speed contest is excluded. It is my opinion that an insurance company has much less risk in insuring you and your motorcycle at a track day than they have when you are on the street. Particularly with regard to liability.
I work for progressive and our policy is worded very similar. As long as you tell them you arent competing in any way and you are just taking a school, you should be covered.
I was told also by SF it was covered as long as its a rider improvment program. Track days are not racing or speed contests. As you are only out there to become a better rider. We all know if we do race then we are going to be getting a talk too. It seems its that fine line as to if its covered or not. It is frustrating when u hear the same company tell some folks its covered and others its not. I wouldnt lie either but trackdays should be covered as it just makes sense. What is SF telling everyone else who has them or better yet has anyone actually had to use them for a crash? What was the outcome? I even called my Health ins provider to make sure they would cover me if I was in the hospital and the answer was yes as long as its not racing. (ppo on my health insurance through work)
state farm went as far as to say we wont cover your truck camper bike u if you say race track . so many people come to track days & fall then claim it ,that they have stopped all coverages at race tracks affective 08 . if you know your comming to the track atleast twice a year buy race plastic ,&frame slidders . most bikes we pick up are only rashed on one side ,& maybe a clip on .
I guess dont use the R word then. To say they wont cover your trailor is wrong IMO. If u go camping and a bear chews on your camper are u then just out the cash???
that i assume is covered as long as he wasnt racing another bear . my agent said way to many claims . yes your safer but alot of us also push the limits be careful with your wording
Technically this gives them an out if you were "near" any other bikes and trying to ride faster... Insurance companys make money by NOT paying claims. Never volaunteer anything to them and when you have the upper hand stick it in them all the way to the handle. They don't think twice about doing the same to you.
Thanks for all ur input guys. I emailed my agent again trying to clarify and explain in more detail and his response was: I just double checked with my underwriter. As long as there is absolutely no racing or hill climbing going on you would have coverage. If this is a racing skills class there would be no coverage. If the goal is strictly to make you a better rider you would have coverage. If you have any further questions, please let me know.
Just went throu the real deal with my insurance (Progressive). I was taking the Ed Bargy school. I wrecked my bike during the school. I had called my agent 3 days before the class to make sure that I was covered. My agent stated "If you are not in a timed event (race) you are covered". Progressive denied the claim when they saw the word "racing" in every sentence on the Bargy site. My broker worked out a deal because I had disclosed the school beforehand. I believe it came out of my brokers pocket. I will be looking for coverage elswhere. Words not to use: Racing Closed course Timed event o yea and RACING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
