I have my bike torn down currently, and while the wheels were off I was going to plasti dip them(I have black rims and would like orange but can't really afford powder coating atm). I know regulation says wheel weights need to be taped so I have a delima. Plasti dipping over wheel weights is fine. Plasti dipping over taped wheel weights should be fine as well. Will tech inspection take my word that the wheel weights are taped under the plasti dip?

Shouldn't be an issue... Bribery always helps. Tech inspectors like Good Coffee and Good Scotch.

Easy way to do this is to photo document during the process, taking pictures at every step so to explain. Bring the pics with you to tech.

Meijer sells every pattern and color duct-tape as well, I'd buy some orange duct-tape before I trusted Plastidip to adhere to any other tape. Even if the color contrasts the blaze orange dip a bit, whom cares!

I bought some GOLD for my blingin' ride :hat:.

Yes, I am on every forum!

What happens when you change tires and need to rebalance if the weights are under the plasti dip stuff?

I just changed the tires at the beginning of the month, so it should last me the remainder of the summer/next summer(hopefully, we'll see how many track days I can get to) without needing new tires. When the time comes, you peel all the plasti dip off. It's only $30-$50 for 3 cans of plasti dip, plus 2 cans of glossifier(give it that shiny powder coated look). This is my broke-college student solution.

There might be a way to peel just the area around the weight plus whatever adjustment space you need, then reheat the plasti dip and respray the peeled area in order to have it combine with the old dip. By this time, you might want a fresh paint anyways.

I plastidiped my rear wheel white to see if I liked it. Didn't have a problem at tech, and I didn't tape the weights.

The plastdip started coming off at a seam in the wheel after about a month, but confirmed that I do indeed like my wheels white, and I'll get them powder coated next year.

I just taped over the plastidip. Of course, when you peel the tape, you peel the plastidip with it. I eventually had them powder coated for $50 each, plus an extra $10 for them to remove the plastidip I think.

    OP-

I'd rather you tape THEN plasti-dip instead of plasti-dip THEN paint. I don't trust the plasti-dip to hold anything!

Definitely tape then plasti-dip. Make those weights as secure as possible.

Think of the damage a thrown wheel weight can do to a following rider if you fling one at speed and it hits them in the face shield, it could be very, very bad.

You know, I'm glad someone brought this up. I hadn't considered the effects of tape over plasti-dip. Considering how often I change my tires this rules out plasti-dip as a viable option.

when you tape then plastidip you will be able to see the tape under the plastidip. so it will be obvious that the weights are taped.

also you can always take a razor and after you dip over the tape cut around the tap and the plasti dip will only pull off where you cut and this will expose only the tape in that area and leave the remainder of the will dipped without pulling it away.
