I have ridden this bike for 3-1/2 seasons and I have no idea if any work has ever been done on it before I bought it. I have done nothing to it other than change the oil. At what point should I have it refreshed? Should I get the valves done? What else should I have done if anything at all? I'm a slow A rider but it would seem people pull away on the straights more than they used to. Just looking for some advice on what you might do. Thank you.
Depends on a lot of things. I can tell you when I checked on a full refresh on an 07 750 that included a complete teardown with new lower end bearings, rings, valves, valve springs and all the other misc parts that go with that including having the valve seats cut you are into some serious money. The valves being Ti are $1200 or more just for those 16 valves. You can easily drop $4500-$5000 for a true FULL refresh. There are cheaper ways of course but as soon as you say replace the valves you are already into some serious money.
Get a compression and leak down test done. That will tell you what is needed internally if anything. For sure do a valve adjustment.
I'm on my 5th season on mine, still runs great. I wouldn't touch it unless it gives you reason to (burns oil, etc.)....
In Iowa. Was thinking just adjusting the valves. It still runs great, I don't know what all I can do on the cheap but nothing in track days is on the cheap. I'll try the compression check and leak down thing to see what that tells me.
PM PJ Doran on here... He is in Iowa and works at Hicklan Motorsports.. I am sure he knows a few builders up there...
