innerestin tidbit A little-known piece of trivia is that Barry Sheene invented the motorcycle back protector, with a prototype model he made himself out of old helmet visors, arranged so they could curve in one direction, but not the other. Sheene gave the prototype along with all rights to the Italian company Dainese - they and other companies have manufactured back protectors since then. can't find a photo.... anyone? I seem to remember seeing it in a book. Code's? Ienatsch's?
I've been using the Knox Air Gillet for the past year and I really like it. The chest protector comes out easily when you unzip and pull the velcro loose so you can get comfortable when you get off the bike without taking all of your gear off if you don't want to. It does feel bulky until your suit stretches to fit it but that only takes a couple of track days to resolve. You don't even notice it on the bike.
I've got one, but won't fit under my suit :frusty: So I'm wearing an Icon vest instead for the moment.
if the bike lands on you, you're gonna need a kevlar ballistic vest to protect you. especially if it lands on you peg first. i see this as a very rare occurance but i understand your concern. i like my knox chest protector. i like that it is seperate from my chest protector that way if one gets damaged i can replace it without replacing a whole "vest" ive tested it a couple of time and taken one hard hit and it did great! as you shop around and look for something you have to decide what you want as far as protection vs comfort vs cost vs fit. just like everything else we look into as far as protection goes. bottom line is i would never get on the track without one ever again. i feel naked if i dont have it on. even on those super hot days. ive had a fractured sternum and it is the most painful thing i have even gone through
Partytimedave, you officially have the best username ever. I hope you're wearing something over that Stryker vest in those mountains.
I also wear a Forcfield T-Pro chest protector. I also use their Armor Shorts and back protector. They have served me well when I did stupid things on track.
Are you wearing the vest over your suit? If not, would there be anything wrong with doing that - other than that you would probably slide a long a$$ way when you wrecked? Just to clarify - this what i'm talking about. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q...FCF703664CBFF61F0F6099013513&selectedIndex=38
I went with Impact Armour as well. it's really nice to have one custom fit to your size. I should be getting mine next week after month and a half wait Sneak peak.... :hat:
Impact armour looks great. I love my knox though for now. I like how it really wraps around for some side protection.
Built in back protector in my Hein Gericke suit. And an older Knox chest protector I purchased in 2007/2008. Does anyone know what the spec's were on the Hein Gerike back protector? I believe it is CE level 1.
Back protector Didn't think that built-in back protectors were allowed... Quote rule 5 & 6 "5.Advanced and Intermediate group riders are required to wear back protectors. Soft back pads sewn into suits are not enough. We sell Knox back protectors at special STT member discounts. We can arrange to deliver your new back protector to you the day of your event or ship it to your home. We have a limited number of back protectors for rent at each event. 6.STT also asks that you consider the use of a chest protector. Now yours may not be "soft", but is it enough to meet STT requirements? My back and chest protector are Knox.
