Is it permitted to come and watch an event? My wife and I are considering attending an STT event and would like to come and see one first hand, if possible. We are in Hickory, NC so only a couple hours or so from Kershaw.
BTW - You sent me an email about bikes...... Either of those bikes are splendid choices for a first track day and will take you just about as far as you want to go in your track riding pursuits. Age is a frame of mind....... Bonnie and I are being hounded by AARP Your DRZ will embarass many "real" race bikes and do it with you having a smile on your face that will take week to wipe off. Top speed isn't what makes the track fun, it's corners. The bandit is a sweet little "do everything" bike and I like the air-oil cooled 600 motor. They're simple and make good usable power. Please come on out to CMP and spectate. You can even sit in on our Novice Class for free.. and you'll have a head-start on your first track day. Most events charge a $5 gate fee but that's for a whole day of hanging out. Please make a point to introduce yourselves to Mark and Lois Sheldon, they are the STT Southern Event directors and great folks. Best regards, Monte
Thanks very much for the reply, Monte. I saw the STT forum link after I sent you the the e-mail, so thought I would inquire there as well. Thanks also for the invitation to sit in on the Novice class and for the positive comments regarding our bikes. My wife has to work on Saturday so we will plan to come down to the Sunday session. We will be sure to look for Mark and Lois. Mike OD
Thanks much for the warning. STT might only allow me one track session, though, as I am arguably the slowest rider on the planet. My wife and I also ride trials, and some friends have suggested that my pace on a street bike is just a little above trials speed.
Its not about how fast you are... Its about how much fun your having... Looking forward to seeing you there... Marc
cmp What is the coldest they will have a track day? Weather.com has Kershaw at 24 degs Saturday morning. High of 50 degs. I will be in the novice class. This will be my 2nd time doing a track day weekend at cmp and with STT. Last time I laid it down at cmp back on September 23rd. No big deal about laying it down, it just got me hooked doing track days. I turned my bike into a track only bike since then. Another ? I have is, how will michelin pilot powers do with the weather at hand. I have no tire warmers.
Re: cmp The show will go on regardless of the temp.... Just take it way way easy the first 2 sessions before lunch. I will be preaching that all weekend... Work on other things like your form, lines ect.. Save your speed for later in the day. As far as your tires go they should be OK after a couple of laps. However now that your bike is a dedicated track bike you may want to go with a Race Compound for better grip...Talk to George about it when you get there. He knows alot about the Michelins...
Ya'll bring something warm to wear, cause fo sho it's gonna be chilly! A sweatshirt over the leathers helps on the track!
Yeah, it was freakin ccccooolllllddddddd! Keepin the bikes warm. I don't know who owned these. Rough weekend with the cold, oil slicks, and everything else. I had so many saved front end tucks Saturday morning it was not even funny and did not ride Sunday. I left today while someone was being flown out on the helo. Hope that dude comes out ok.... Evening at Kershaw....
Just got home and UNLOADED.... I can finally tell everyone I passed Mark Sheldon twice..... On I-20 West going home..... Great great weekend despite the chill.. Today was a Blue Ribbon day for sure... Great meeting alot of new people and seeing those from other events... CMP did a great job as well... Looking forward to going there again.... Marc
Mark and his whole crew put on a great track weekend, this was my first time with STT and because of mark and the staff i will be back again for sure. My buddy and i already made plans to do the anual thanksgiving CMP weekend next year. Even with the oil downs and red flags the staff was on point in getting it cleaned up and making sure it was safe for everyone. STT Southern 2 thumbs up Thanks again Mark
well, made it back to ohio safe and sound. it was and excellent weekend at the track for sure. got to meet some super great people and enjoyed the track big time. this was my first time riding with the Southern division and i thought that everyone did an outstanding job the entire weekend.
Ozzy, Great meeting you guys Man... Looking forward to a Mid Ohio day with you guys up there sometime.... Marc
For future reference...Quality Inn in Lugoff about 15 miles from the track just off I-20 was $76 for both nights including taxes and all that jazz. Probably could have rolled the bike in the room on the lower level without them knowing to keep it warm. Not the ritz but clean room/bathroom, heater, tv, etc. So $50 to camp in the cold or $25 more to have a warm bed and personal bathroom/shower. Great weekend.
