I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking recently, and wanted to take the time to say hello. Aside from that, I wanted to get input from other members about bringing a Yamaha FJR out for a track day. I know it's nowhere near a track bike, but I would like to get the experience and possibly pick up some pointers to improve my riding. To be honest, I really suck in the curves, and would like to get over my trepidation of leaning the motorcycle; I'm thinking a track day would be a good start. Thoughts?

FJR is a capable corner carver, is it a sport bike? No but it can still corner low and well! Bring it but most importantly, bring the right attitude and an open mind to constructive coaching! You will have a blast!!

    Welcome!

You and your bike will do just fine! It's easier to gain confidence on a bike you are already used to on a track with instructors there to help you. You will have a great time and possibly get hooked on track days! If you get hooked, then you might decide to get a track specific bike but you certainly will be fine on the FJR to start. Ride safe and have fun!

    First welcome to the forum.
Second come on out. Once you start grinding the foot pegs then you can decide on a direction you want to go like a dedicated track bike.

My first four track days where on my Triumph Tiger 1050, It's not a track bike, I went from a 2 inch chicken strip to none and started grinding the feelers on the pegs. Coach said get your ass off the seat..

    Should you yes,, oh yes..

every motorcycle rider should ride a trackday.
You will learn so much about how to control you bike in a very safe environment.
Likely learn something hat will save your life on the first day.
Crash avoidance is the best way to not crash.

Look at the ride right form get you first hit free, winner also gets free leather rental if I remember correctly.

You will learn more in a day on the track than an entire year on the street. No yellow line, no cars, trucks, dogs, kids, sand, rocks.., or police. It's worth every penny and will make you a rider better able to handle unseen situations on the street.

Make sure you go and read the tech requirements for prepping you and your bike. It's a much more enjoyable day when you have that all set up when you show up.

Yes it would be an excellent start... Just leave the EGO at home..Plan on coming to Road Atlanta in November.... Also keep an eye out for a Ride Right Post if one gets up for a free day... If not you can sit in the classroom sessions and see what the day consist of . This will definitely enrich your riding skills. Welcome to the fun...

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and comments. I've been looking at the upcoming track day schedule, and, based on your input, will sign up for one, or more, of the track days before the end of 2016. I'm stoked to hear how much can be learned from just a single day! Trust me, there's no ego here. Just the desire to get better, safer, and have fun while doing it. In other words, I'm a sponge. I only hope the instructors, and track veterans, are prepared for the bombardment of questions and have exercised their necks enough to be able to sustain all of the head shaking they will endure while trying to impart some knowledge to me. LOL.

If/when I sign up for one of the events previously mentioned, I hope to see you there so I can say thanks in person.

That good, huh? Unfortunately, other obligations won't allow me to make it that weekend. It may be for the best. Gives me something to look forward to...

It's an incredible track with nice facilities, but I've never had a bad time at a track day. Anywhere you go will be a hoot.

I had years of riding on the road before I did my first track day.... I learned a ton and every weekend I got out on the track I continued to learn. STT staff is an amazing group of people and instructors. You will have a blast!!!

I'm looking forward to getting on the track (even if it is with a sport-tourer). And the camaraderie that seems so apparent with STT.

Indeed! I was really bummed that Marc and Bill weren't at Little Tally. :( Did 12 oz curls with the 129 crew and had a great time as usual though! ;)
