I hope this is the right place to post this question, but I'm planning on going to Barber in September for my first Novice track day, and wanted to make sure my riding jacket and pants where acceptable. I have a BiLT Explorer Air Adventure Jacket and Pants and was hoping someone could direct me to the right person who could tell me if it is ok or not before I go.

I have included a link for someone to take a look at the description.

    Thanks

Hoping one of the STT staff folks can chime in to give you a definitive answer, but I know one of the keys is to have a full circumference zipper between the pants and jacket.

In the 3 STT days that I've done, they've not required me to bring my riding gear to tech inspection, so I'm guessing that they look for any glaring issues as you're gridding up. That said, they do offer leather rentals for a reasonable price, so that could be an alternate for you.

Hi, @Lanval welcome to the addiction . Here are the Gear Requirements for STT track days I have highlighted the portion that pertains to your specific question!

    Rider Gear Requirements

    • Damage free BSI,ECE-2205, DOT or SNELL full-face helmet with face shield.
    • Riding boots that fully cover the ankle.
    • Gauntlet style gloves with full wrist coverage.
    • One or two piece leathers. Two piece leather suits must zip together for Novice, Intermediate or Advanced groups. Ballistic nylon suits such as Joe Rocket, AeroStitch etc. are acceptable in the Novice ONLY. They can be one piece or two piece that zip together with 50% zipper contact, reinforced and padded shoulders, elbows, hips, and knee areas. No chaps.
    • Advanced and Intermediate group riders are required to wear back protectors. Soft back pads sewn into suits are not enough. We sell Knox back protectors at special STT member discounts. We can arrange to deliver your new back protector to you the day of your event or ship it to your home. We have a limited number of back protectors for rent at each event.
    • STT also asks that you consider the use of a chest protector.

I couldn't tell from that link if your combo does that.. if you need STT does Offer Leather suit rentals at certain track days if you need to do that please visit this link STT Leather rental

Looked at the link and video. Using the guide lines and noting there's no mention of a zipper to attach the jacket to the pants would say no.

Avail yourself to the leather rental.

Would also suggest doing a little research into textile gear, it's a couple steps above none but you really want a hide between you and the road.
Welcome to the forum and fun. Barber first day, wow I'm jealous what a place to learn.
Really beautiful place. If your not local to there, seriously consider a day before to enjoy the museum amazing place.

Thanks for the quick replies, they do have a 50%+ zipper to attach the jacket and pants together, not full 100%. I also have some leather track pants from cyclegear, but they do not have the 50% zipper. Most likely I will go the leather rental route, as I'm ATGATT type of person. I get strange looks and question about being hot when I ride in leather pants, mid summer here in TN. Just invested in a Forcefield Pro Shirt X-V 2 and looking for a pair of Klim Tactical Shorts.

Been there done that with odd looks.
Since you know what fits size wise, get the money ready and start looking for a nice used deal.
Between here and the Wera forum suits keep showing up.

Yes a great course, I'm up in middle TN, about 40 miles south of Nashville in a place called Columbia, where the 11th President, President Polk lived. So I'm in a good location for Ohio, Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and anywhere else you can suggest I should go....

Meant to add that I'm starting out on a 2002 SV650, bought it specially to put on the track. Not planning anything special with it, but following peoples advice about how great a bike it is to learn on. I also have a R6 which is track ready, but that is for another time, or another rider, something to grow into.

Been riding 35 years on and off, and have a FJR1300, DL1000, Sv650 and the R6, enough toys right now.

Great choice on the SV.....it's a great track bike to learn on and progress! That's what I started out on and enjoyed riding it all the way from Novice into Advanced.
Get signed up for some leather rentals and enjoy Barber. It's an amazing facility from the track to the museum and the grounds as well. Have fun!

Could someone please briefly explain how the Novice group is set up? Are there different levels in the Novice group?

They'll split you up into different groups at the first Novice classroom session. Each group has anywhere between 2 and 5 riders. Groups 1 and 2 are for those who want something faster and are on their way to Intermediate. The lower groups are for the newbies and slower people like me.

The groups hold for the first 3-4 sessions, and from there it comes down to how you and your coach want to approach the rest of the day.

I'll also say that the groups aren't set in stone, and if you feel the group is too fast/slow, say something! They're more than happy to move people around so that everyone get's the amount of instruction they want/need.

    Thanks McMatt,

I will start at the bottom, and slowly crab my way up. I'm excited to go and learn, and I cannot see how I could get bored starting at the beginning even if I'm deemed more capable. Now, has anyone ever be thrown out of Novice because they would not move up, bit like a child that wont leave home....because that might be me... :)

not in the least, you are allowed to stay in novice as long as you would like , at some point most peoples skill dictates this move to intermediate and then to advanced. but we will never FORCE you out of a group unless it is for your own safety or safety of others... I know many people that stayed in novice for 2-3 years. I have seen people that stay in intermediate for 5-6 years as that is where they are comfortable.. they have reached whatever skill set they like and thats where they are happy!

Come up to Putnam, I always have a spare room.

On your other question about being bumped.
No never have I seen anyone forced to bump. Have witnessed some black flags for inside passes are for Advanced only and novice passing is on the straights only. Not to mention,
Took a while but I finally got bored with novice and asked to be evaluated and was bumped up. I got bored with the first couple of sessions designed for novice.
Don't really expect I'll ever make it to Advanced. My skill set and age along with drive has me doubting it. Not to mention the number of people who pass me compared to my pass rate shows I've got a long way to go.
Question should be ARE YOU HAVING FUN. Are you leaning something. If yes then stay where your at.
Once it's no then maybe it's time to consider being evaluated. That's my 2 cents, which doesn't buy much these days. LOL

    OH, welcome to the addiction.

Thanks for everyone who wrote, or just read my post. I look forward to meeting as many of you in the future, and Indy when does Putnam run track days? as I will take you upon the room offer. Once again thanks for the warm welcome.

This year STT didn't do much there. I'll be running next Sunday the 26th with Indy Ducati. and October with Midwest I think.

I have a Shoei Neotec II helmet which is a modular, is that acceptable for Novice?

NEWS FLASH: I'm officially signed up for Novice on September 2nd 2018 at Barber Motor speedway. Plan on going down on Saturday and getting a feel of what is happening, and camping over night, and then the big day. Thanks to everyone for all your help and suggestions.

I Believe they are allowed but we generally not preferred. though I do not want to speak incorrectly
@mastermindtrev could you clarify, I looked on the main site it only stated rated full face helmets no mention of modular

    STT track day rules

They do not say you can't (I'm surprised, every other group it is stated as a no modular)
So to date looks like you can, but should you?

Most of the things down the road will be niceties not necessities. The safety stuff for your ass, head. Question should be what is it worth.
Shame if someone else values it more than you do.

While most if not all of us want to see many new track day riders, I know we all want you to be safety minded.
Once you start valuing YOUR safety then you will consider ours. IF you don't think your safety is a concern will you consider ours.

Hope you can make it, give a shout out and good chance someone has a helmet you can use along with leathers.
Make it to Putnam and can use mine, I've got spares.

We allow modular helmets in novice.... but they are not preferred. Again, as long as it's a DOT/Snell full face helmet that is not damaged, it meets the requirements.

Thanks for all the support, encouragement, and helpful replies to my post. I am ready with a full set of leathers, a full face helmet, and a readiness to learn.
