Id say there are huge differences in a small motorcycle, with little in the way of gyroscopic forces, and a supersport bike at speed, much in the same way there is a huge difference from a dirtbike to a bicycle. Peg steerign on a bicycle, or a dirtbike is not the same as a supersport. It takes a lot more effort to get a supersport to change directions, and the weight of the rider, and the bike in comparison has a much larger disparity.

I (and a lot of other people) contend that for STEERING a bike the only thing the pegs do is really give you leverage to turn the bars. They dont act to steer the bike.

Of course this is argued to no end by people on either side of the "fence"

I think a lot of the argument comes down to differences of perception of what the rider is doing, not what he actually IS doing.

with that said, where you weight the bike during the arc of a turn, does effect traction. Most people say to weight the outside peg, and I agree. I find it quite hard to literally apply a force to the outside peg though, and prefer to describe it as a lack of weight on the inside peg. again I think it is symantics here in how a rider percieves what he is doing. Not what he is ACTUALLY doing.

I need to go back and read the entire thread. I have only read this last page. But in relation to the leg dangle, I feel it is mostly a "balancing pole" like a tight rope walker uses. Notice though that it is more often seenn with the left leg than the right. What I have noticed is that as I have gotten faster, as I brake hard and downshift, then try to get my foot back to the peg, the braking forces will pull my foot forward a bit. It simply is not worth the effort right then to try to put it back on. I wait a bit. I am not trying to do it, but my foot is just off the peg. NOt rossi style at all though. Just in front of and above the peg until I let out of the brakes a little.

Problem is, saying that doesn't make you sound SMART. A five paragraph physics paper on your opinion; however, is a real ego booster.

Well... I do that on the street, it makes people think I'm cool.... lol

see it this way, moving your leg off the peg and further away from the bike and lower will lower and rearrange your center of gravity maybe only by a few mm, but that might already be enough to feel more comfortable if you are going to the limits. I had a scare a few weeks back at blackhawk and took T6 from the inside and had to turn tight as I was still in process of passing people when I should already be turning in.

Was hanging out with Joey Pascarella at YCRS a few weeks ago (this years daytona 200 winner) and he showed us his boot, it was destroyed from doing this, he said he goes through about 10 pairs of boots a year LOL. Also got to spend some time out on track with him and watched him haul ass into turn 1 (open left hander), dangling away, but carrying just incredible speed into that corner very hard on the brakes, it did look goofy seeing someone do it right in front of you, but who am I to argue, he was haulin' ass into that corner.

Ok, can someone tell me then why I'm breathing heavy and exhausted and have really bad arm pump and ankle cramps after a race on my 125 and have to sit down, while I'm only mildly dewy and glowing after a race on my 600RR?

Kinda proves he isn't turning with the inside peg though lol (other thread)

There is definitely something to the dangle but still have not seen anyone answer exactly what. Odd that nobody that does it knows why they do for sure

The only real valid reason I can understand to stick your leg out like that on a sportbike / gp bike is if you are backing it down into the corner to scrub off speed and get it pointed back in the right direction ASAP. The sticking the leg out thing could just be rider preference but in flat track and dirt riding most stick their leg out for a feeler. Flat track you can use your left leg as almost a tripod in the case you start to slide or tuck the whole bike too fast.

Danny Walker also told us the only reason to slide the motorcycle is to scrub the speed off during breaking. Once you are done sliding or scrubbing the speed off it's important to get back on top of the tire ASAP. He used to slap us with a stick if we spun the tire on the exit of the corner still leaned over. Get it stood back up onto the meat of the tire before you start rolling on heavy gas.

I'm not the most fast or the best rider on the planet by any means. But I understand the concepts of why different fast riders do this and that. Sticking your leg out on a sportbike or Gp bike doesn't seem practical to me. You surely don't want to dab a road race boot on the pavement at 95 mph. You're going to snag your leg and bust your knee or leg into a thousand peices. Ever ride flat track without a hot shoe? Wrong move if you want to walk later on that evening. Especially on a sticky clay track. Before I got my hot shoe I shaved down the heal on my motocross boot.

You should still shave the heal off even with a steel shoe. JMO

I wish Gary at Lightshoe would have told me that because I've been stommping my boot into that damn hotshoe for years to get the heal down in there. I sent him the boot and he fit the shoe to it. But it fits tight with the dog collar holding it on. : )

Are you going to shoot me an email or what?
