78 is also called Bankhead Hwy. This is what the ALDOT website said: Major Project Jefferson County - I-20 Jefferson County - I-20: Eastbound lanes closed to traffic between exits 130 and 136 during eastbound construction. Eastbound traffic to continue along I-59north to exit 137 to I-459 to I-20 east. Estimated Completion: Fall 2013 http://alitsweb.dot.state.al.us/its/ Look at the I-20 project in Jefferson County.
Just take the detour that is what I did last time. You come across on I20 then continue on I59 instead of getting on I20 (which is closed) then you get on I459 and head south back to I20. It was only a few minutes out of the way.
Last time I went west on I-20 past Barber, I-20 eastbound literally did not exist. There was no road. They are tearing it up completely and rebuilding it. I was headed to points west of Alabama, so when I came back east I took 459 around the southside and picked up 20, no problems and at late rush hour. I would avoid the area coming east bound where the construction is as much as possible if I were coming that way. BTW, there is no notice of the closure west of 459. They just let you go downtown and get caught in the mess.
Ed: Oh, I gotcha, East on 59, skip I20 and keep going East on 59 until 459, then jog back south to 20E?
That is the best route, IF IF IF you can get through there before 4:30 PM. After that it bottlenecks either way. . . And sux... Best bet if you will be coming through between 4-6 is Bankhead hwy( 78 ). It will take you straight by the exit. Everyone should be taking Friday off work early anyway. . Right????:thumb:
keith, disregard my PM; I didn't realize you can get on 59 where it and 20 split. I thought 20 was closed at 65. so, take 59N/E then 459 south to 20. BOOM. you're there!
Are the best cupcakes!!!!!! I just realized.... you never brought your director a cupcake..... hmmmm...... t
