So I'm thinking about signing up for the early March day at Barber because the other dates are just not working out for me. But what is the weather really like in Birmingham in the beginning of March?
Average temps for Barber. I'm already signed up but have never been to Barber but average temperature was similar to VIR in early April, which I have been to. Warmed up nicely by 2nd or 3rd session when I went there but really cold in the morning. Just hope it doesn't rain
I guess it probably depends on how acclimated you are to your local weather conditions. For me, that Barber trip will feel like spring break, even in the morning.
Not to far off on agreeing with Chris's comment. Got 4 of us coming from cleveland, Ohio but still hoping for mid-60's day.
I did it last year. Those were some cold nights sleeping in the pickup. After a couple sessions, the weather was perfect for track days. There was snow on the ground in Chicago when I left for Barber.
Yup. Always good enough to go ahead and make the drive. I bought both days a couple weeks ago. :thumb:
there is a Hampton inn within a half mile from the entrance to barber. They give a discount if you tell them you are riding at the track with STT.
This one is about 1/2 mile from track...very motorcycle friendly(not sure it isn't owned by Barber) http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/alabama/hampton-inn-birmingham-leeds-al-BHMLEHX/index.html
They have one of the motorcycles from the museum in the lobby, so you might be on to something! It is a very clean hotel and it is very motorcycle friendly, but there isn't much else around there I like it because I can get to the track so easily in the morning. The Sportbike Track Time rate is good for about $20 a night.
Trussville is less than 10 min from track with nice hotels. there is a Hampton there also maybe they will give the stt rate also.
BTW - Barber has its ultimate grip at about 60deg outside if the sun is out. That is hot enough to provide great grip, but not hot enough for the tires to get greasy. I ran my personal best at Barber when it was 58deg.
Really...that surprises me it's at that cold a temp. The part I have a hard time getting used to is the amount of difference in track temp in the shade in the morning (turns 2-3) vs out in the open...don't know if it makes much difference or not, but it's enough in my head to cause me to check up until I actually see sun on the asphalt...please opine...
Yep, between 60-65deg. JD40 told me that when we were at the GNF. Of course, there are other factors. Sun needs to be out, track dry, a couple of groups/races been out to heat up the track and lay some rubber down, etc. But it doesnt have to be 75-80deg for Barber to be capable of some fast times.
